His 5km walk victory came in a winning time of 23.59mins, putting him ahead of team-mate Gordon Chapman who produced a well-paced walk to finish 19th in 34.44mins. Williams took the 10km walk title in a time of 50.25mins, with John Culshaw Jr putting in an excellent display to finish 13th in 1:02.25hrs. | TAC X Country Teams Enjoy Best Ever Results |
Friday, October 28 2005 |
The first West Midland Young Athletes Cross Country League event of the season at Pype Hayes proved to be the best ever for Tamworth Athletic Club. Kristian Edwards and Stephen Parkes both finished as runners-up in their respective races and Steve Deeley with fifth in the under-15s boys' race. Team honours went to the under-15s boys team of Deeley, Steve Harris, Craig Farrell, Matthew Wood, Joe Saddington, Simon Watson Sam Micklewright, Jacob Hughes, Tom Adams and Ben Horsley, and under-13s team of Parkes, Luke Roughley, Nathan Christian, Robert Farrell and Adam McGee. Both teams finished as runners-up. The under-11 boys of Edwards, Ellis Cross, Anthony Parkes, Oliver Wood, Ricky Hawkes and Toby Jobburns were third, which was the best result by a Tamworth under-11s team for over 20 years. The under-11 girls team of Eloise Redfern, Jasmine Oliver, Rebecca Bradford, Sophie Oldfield, Rosanne Childs and Samantha Lawton were fifth. Tamworth AC are now seventh out of 19 teams after the first round. Had it not been for injuries during the races to Sarah Dryhurst and Sophie Kelly, in the under-13s girls, Amy Williams and Rebecca Pate in the under-15s girls and Simon King in the under-17s men, the team would have finished much higher. The under 13 girls' team missed the performances of Sarah and Sophie but Nicole King, Emma Farrell, Leanne Lewis and Gina Heseltine all ran well for the team. The under 15 girls were depleted by injuries during the race but Elyse Jinks' 29th place was her best result since joining the club. Laura Lewis who has been ill for some time is slowly coming back to form and finished in 52nd place. The final two races were the under-17 men and women's races. Megan Jacobs continued her form from last year with a 22nd place and Marianne Pritchard was not far behind in 28th. In the men's race, Tom Adams Snr continued his gradual recovery from injury with 23rd place.

| Top Appointment For Chairman |
Friday, October 28 2005 |
Tamworth Ac chairman John Graves has been named as one of nine Interim Regional Chairman for England Athletics as part of a major shake-up in how the sport is governed. Graves has been handed the role of setting up a regional council, recruiting regional managers and leading the direction of athletics in the West Midlands. The former Wilnecote High School teacher was nominated for the voluntary role by other Midlands clubs and his appointment was confirmed by UK:Athletics last week. He will also sit on the England Council. The formation of regional chairs is part of the implementation of the Foster Report, which has been drawn up to modernise athletics to make better use of the scarce resources in athletics. The major recommendation of the report was that there should be a decentralisation of the sport, taking athletics delivery as close as possible to the athletes, clubs, coaches, schools, officials and other volunteers that work in grassroots athletics. England Athletics will be responsible for the policy, together with central services, such as insurance and welfare. The regional chairs will guide, support and monitor the regional delivery of the strategy for athletics in the UK. "Choosing a chair from Tamworth AC is official recognition of the hard work that the club has undertaken to recruit and retain over 350 athletes from the local area and for the huge task of maintaining and upgrading its facilities," Graves said. | Triathlon Update |
Thursday, October 13 2005 |
Tamworth Athletic Club Triathlon No doubt you’ve been wondering why it’s all gone very quiet over the last few weeks! After working hard with Paul Ferrier and John Williams to launch and set up swim and run-based training opportunities – the latter with the help of Tamworth Athletic Club (TAC) – I realised last month that in trying to be in Tamworth every Thursday to lead a session and to build the club from my Leicester base, I’d simply bitten off more than I could chew. So here’s where we are now:
Potential Members We have gathered 30 names of people who want to see a tri scene in Tamworth. These are folks of all shapes and sizes and abilities. In here are people with triathlon coaching qualifications.
Club Host Tamworth Athletic Club continue to stand by their offer to host TACT at the Tamworth stadium base. Contact John and Christine Graves tel 01827 287177 / email tamworthac@aol.com This means TACT simply inherits an existing club structure with a ready base and like-minded people. We will be able to affiliate TACT to the BTA easily because of this. There is healthy interest in TAC to ‘try triathlon.’ TACT members simply pay annual membership of around £30 to TAC.
Training Sessions Swimming Paul Ferrier www.fastlaneswimming.co.uk (Tel 0797 689 6912) has created swim sessions at Wilnecote School Tuesday 8.15 – 9pm and Woodhouse School Tuesday 8.15-9pm. Price £3.75 per session. Also with Tamworth Swimming Club at The Peaks Thursday 8.30-9.30pm price annual club membership £50.00. Bosworth Water Park is available in season Saturday 7.30-9am price £3.00 / car plus £2.00 / swim. Running TAC Tuesday and Thursday 6.30-8pm and now Sunday morning 10.30-12.30 noon. Various squads and coaches available. Confirmation that bikes cannot be used on the track I’m afraid. Club fees apply on the night. Cycling We now have a contact with Tamworth Cycling Club and will be inviting them down to the Oct 23rd session.
Injury Prevention & Treatment With John Williams at Atlas Pain Relief Centre, Tamworth www.atlaspainrelief.com Tel 01827 59943.
Website www.tamworthtriathlon.co.uk including a Forum for member chat. You can log on and use this now to stay in touch with people.
Next Steps TAC will open the track up on a trial basis on Sunday mornings starting this month. I will host a session Oct 23rd 10.30-12. This will be a run-based session followed by a meeting with TAC to agree how to progress TACT from here. If you would like to be involved in the running of the triathlon section of TAC please come down and make yourself known. This will be a chance to welcome people to our world, give advice and have a chance to train with others.
We will need local people to step up and lead the development of the club. I will gladly provide guidance and a monthly focus if there is a desire for this, but that will be the limit of my role given my priorities for my own business and my geographical remoteness!
If you are prepared to help TACT in any way please come along on Oct 23rd when we will start this process.
This letter is being emailed to all on our database AND sent out in the old fashioned post – so apologies for those of you who get duplicates!
Best wishes, ANDY MOUNCEY

| Williams Stars For Midlands Team |
Tuesday, October 11 2005 |
Tamworth race walker Mark Williams produced a superb performance to claim one of only two victories for the Midland Counties at last weekend's Annual Inter-area track match at Dartford. Williams won gold in the men's 5km walk in the 12-event match against the North and the South. The Welsh international, returning to competition after a break from training, was bidding to get the Midlands off to a good start in the opening event. However, his preparation was disrupted as the bus was delayed, arriving at Dartford only a couple of minutes before the start of his race following a six-hour journey. The two Midland athletes travelling on the bus were given just ten minutes to join their team mates and opponents on the start line. After a quick change, Williams had to forego his warm-up routine and had just enough time to make the start line. Not surprisingly, the Tamworth man sat at the back of the leading group over the opening 800m in the 12- and-a-half lap race. Southern athletes Mark Easton, Trevor Jones and Nick Silvester, along with Northern walker Dwayne Butteriy, made the early pace with Williams tucked in behind but British international Easton made a break and Williams tracked him. The pair swapped places over the remaining places before Easton tired and Williams claimed an excellent victory in 23.35mins. William's team mates Steve Arnold and Colin Vesty claimed sixth and seventh respectively. Sheila Owen walked an excellent race in the women's 5km event.Owen, whose season has been interrupted by illness of late, demonstrated that she is returning to form by taking third place in a time of 29:59mins. She walked a well-judged, even paced race to claim good points for the team, with Nuneaton Harriers athlete Ann Wheeler claiming a clear victory ahead of the South's Ann Belchambers to record the Midlands' only other win of the day. The Tamworth Athletic Club athletes more than justified their selection for the team, with the Midlands finishing as runners-up to the Southern Counties.

| Top Javelin Coach Visits Tamworth AC |
Tuesday, October 11 2005 |
| The javelin coach who groomed Steve Backley and Mick Hill for international success has been casting his eye over the javelin squad currently training at Tamworth AC. Amongst the many throwers who train at the club, sixteen-year-olds Alex Shepherd and Brett Byrd are the best in the country in their age group after finishing first and second respectively at the English Schools Championships and have gone on to represent England. The duo have now attracted the attention of UK:Athletics' head of javelin and sprints John Trower, who conducted a training session with the whole squad at Tamworth AC last week. Trower, who is also trying to improve the javelin throwing of Britain's Olympic bronze medal heptathlete Kelly Sotherton, watched the pair train with their county at Lilleshall recently. "I heard Staffordshire had a couple of good lads and I was asked by their coach Phil Owen to take a look at them," Trower said. "I have seen their results and they have both done very well. It is extremely rare to have two good throwers from the same county. "I enjoy the javelin and I know a lot about it so I accepted Phil's invitation to come to Tamworth and have a look at the training and offer some advice. "I am looking at their technique because this can be a dangerous sport and I don't want them to hurt themselves." Whether the duo follow in the footsteps of Backley and Hill depends on how they develop over the next couple of years, Trower said."That was a golden period for British javelin throwing," he added. "The chances of repeating that are remote but we will keep trying. "If the boys have the ambition and motivation then perhaps they can progress. "I am looking to see what they are and what they may become. "They are currently the best in their age group in the country but next year they move up a level. Can they become the best at under-20 level? "This is the start of a very exciting journey for them." John Trower was impressed with the enthusiasm and commitment of the javelin squad and the coaches and was bowled over by the number of athletes using the facilities for training on one evening.

| Handy Hints for X Country Athletes |
Sunday, October 2 2005 |
| Cross country running may conjure up horrible images from your days at school when you were sent on a cross country run for a punishment or asked to run around the field. Running for a club is different. There is a great amount of friendship and a lot less pressure than running on the track. Times don’t matter as every course is different and even if you finish 292nd as Paula Radcliffe did as a junior your position still counts as cross country is always a team event. There is often more of a rivalry in cross country as you are usually trying to beat someone who was close in a previous meeting and you gauge your performance against fellow competitors rather than times. You also get the opportunity to get muddy, run through streams, race up hills and see some wonderful countryside. Races start from your 9th birthday and go up to senior athletes in their 70’s. A few tips for all cross country athletes and parents: You must wear a club vest or you will be disqualified. Vests can be purchased from Chris at the desk in the clubhouse on training nights. Don’t leave it to the last minute to buy one. - You will need to bring at least 4 safety pins to put your number on your vest. Keep a box of pins in your bag as you will always need them.
- It would be better if you had running spikes with longer spikes in them, about 9mm
- Some athletes prefer to race in fell shoes / studs rather than spikes. Walsh are an excellent shoe.
- Bring a carrier bag to keep your dirty shoes in after the race. It saves you messing up your kit bag.
- Bring a change of clothing for after the race, especially training shoes and socks. You will sometimes run through water.
- Bring a towel in case it rains or you get wet.
- Bring warm clothing for before and after the race. Several layers are better than one thick coat.
- Gloves and a hat are advisable in the worst of winter for warming up.
- When it’s very, very cold some people like to race in leggings.
- When it’s very, very cold some people like to wear a tee-shirt under their vest.
- Bring food and drink if necessary but don’t eat too close to your race.
- If it’s a big race a toilet roll may come in handy. It is more comfortable than leaves.
- You must warm up before your race or you will get injuries. It can be very cold in winter.
- Arrive at least 45 minutes before your race, preferably longer so that you can look at the course.
- Always report to the team manager as soon as you arrive.
- Go to the start of the race 10 minutes before the start time. You don’t want to miss it.
- Don’t start too quickly in your first few races. You will eventually find your own starting pace.
- Remember cross country is a team race and every person and every position counts.
- When it is very, very muddy it sometimes helps to tape your running shoes on to your feet.
- Some of our group bring a small tent to shelter in when it rains.
- Make sure you know where the meeting is. Maps will be available for all venues.
- Make sure you know what time your race is. Timetable will be available .
- Check your bag before you leave home.
- Let the team manager know if you can’t make it, either on Thursday at the club or on Tamworthac@aol.com
- Parents are always welcome as young athletes benefit from encouragement.
- If you’re not sure of anything then please ask.
