Enter The Tamworth AC Text Competition Friday, November 25 2005
As part of a pilot scheme we are running an exclusive web site competition with your chance to win a pair of cinema tickets.  It's £1.50 a go, and all funds raised will go directly to the athletic club (bear in mind that the club won't get the full £1.50 as various telecomms companies take their cut, but every little helps!).  As this is a pilot scheme with the intention of running more competitions in the future if this is popular, we would like to hear your feedback.  E-Mail the webmasters on the contacts page should you have any concerns or anything else to say about the competition.  See the Competitions page in member links or Click Here

Schools Inter Counties cross country, November 19th ,Staffordshire University, Stoke on Trent

Seven of the nine Tamworth AC athletes who were selected to run in the Schools Intercounties Cross Country competition competed on the testing course at Staffordshire University, Stoke on Trent in glorious winter sunshine but with crisp conditions under foot.

For six of the club athletes it was their first opportunity to represent their counties. The race was excellent preparation for the major championships that will be taking place early in the New Year.

Representing Staffordshire, Steve Deeley (Wilnecote High School) ran a gutsy race in the Intermediate Boys section taking 23rd place overall and being 3rd counter for Staffordshire. The Staffordshire team took 3rd place against seven other county teams.

The Staffordshire Intermediate Girls team took 2nd place overall with Megan Jacobs (John Taylor High School) in 45th position and 5th counter for her county.

Tamworth AC had three entries in the Junior Boy’s race. Mathew Wood (Wilnecote High School) was 27th and 7th for Staffordshire and hot on his heels was Luke Roughley (Friary Grange High School) 31st and 8th for Staffordshire. Bobbie Grayson (Polesworth High School) finished in 61st and was 7th counter for Warwickshire.

Elyse Jinks (Wilnecote High School) was running for Staffordshire in the Junior Girls race and she performed well to finish in   53rd place overall and was the 9th Staffordshire athlete home.

Warwickshire’s Sarah Dryhurst (Polesworth High School) was the club’s only year 7 athlete that was selected to run but unfortunately a bout of sickness half way around the course meant she was withdrawn by her team manager.

Although selected Tamworth’s Craig Farrell and Simon King did not compete.

Senior Stars are Off and Running Friday, November 18 2005
Tamworth AC's senior athletes made an encouraging start the season in the first cross country meeting of the season at Senneleys Park.
The club had two senior women running in the Midland Women's Cross Country League.
Race walker Sheila Owen was using the event as endurance training for her walking competitions this year and newcomer Claire Warburton was competing in her first race for the club.
Both athletes ran well in exceptionally difficult conditions and were very pleased with their performances.
For some years the club has found it difficult to get people out for the senior men's race but new team manager Tom Orton did a magnificent job in persuading 13 men to run, enabling the club to enter an A and a B team.
After days of heavy rain, the course was a true test of strength and endurance with the stream resembling a small river.
Orton is getting back to the form he showed five years ago and he was the firs athlete home for the club in 11th place.
Juniors Martin Naunton and Adam Bache had an excellent tussle throughout with Martin just getting the edge in 24th place ahead of Adam. Howard Bush and another junior, John Jenkins also had their own personal race. This time Howard, in 34th, just beat John, who was 36th.
Dave Williams was running in his first cross-country race and he was the final counter for the A team in 45th.
The combined scores of the six runners meant that the A team finish fourth, just out of the promotion places.
First runner home for the B team was Mark Wapplington in 48th with James Gwyther, in his first race for the club, in 69th. Steve Deegan was just behind in 70th.
It was also Adie Hall's first race and he finished 86th.
Tamworth's fourth junior was Michael Pierpoint and he just failed to make the top hundred in 102nd.
Mark Trigger, making a return to racing, was 132nd and Nigel Fisher was 145th
Tamworth finished third in the B League.
The next race for both the men and women is at Nuneaton on December 3.

Racewalker Mark Williams achieved another double at a Midland Winter League meeting in Birmingham.

The Welsh international, competing for Tamworth AC, won the 5km and the 10km events to take an overall lead in the series into the final round.
Williams, who is close to retaining his Winter League title, held off an early challenge to win the 5km race in 23.28mins.
Phil Evanson and Gordon Chapman also ran extremely well to make sure Tamworth AC remained amongst the leading teams.
Williams then made it four ins out of four races in the 10km in 49.28mins.
Tamworth produced a strong team performance with John Culshaw Jnr, Mark Culshaw, John Culshaw Snr and Gordon Chapman all doing well.
Anne Ashton and Beryl Chapman produced good personal performances in the women's 5km, while Sheila Owen recorded a time of 59.01mins in the women's 10km, a minute quicker than her time from the first meeting.

WMCCYAL Sandwell Valley Monday, November 7 2005

Over 50 Tamworth AC athletes were unable to compete in the November meeting of the West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League when it was cancelled at the last minute due to atrocious weather conditions in the Sandwell Valley, Tipton.

Following the heavy rains of the previous few days, the condition of the course itself was remarkably good, but the area at the turn of the lap, the start area, and particularly the finish area were all dangerously wet, and quickly turning to mud.

With the onset of yet another downpour just before the meeting, the Referees assessed that there was a significant risk to the youngsters due to the muddy conditions underfoot and at a meeting of Team Managers the majority agreed.  The Referees therefore decided, on the grounds of safety, that conditions underfoot were too poor to allow the meeting to go ahead.  While it might have been possible to miss the worst rain by rescheduling races, there was no chance of the ground drying out.

Unfortunately there is no possibility of re-arranging this fixture in the crowded season, so the League will run for four races only with the next league meeting taking place at Rodbaston College on 11 December.

In the meantime Tamworth AC’s cross country teams will concentrate on their busy training programmes and look forward to the next meeting when two promising young athletes, Robert Stroud and Chloe Williams, will make their cross country debuts for the club.

For more information on cross country training and competition email Chris at tamworthac@aol.com.

New Training Times for All Athletes Friday, November 4 2005

As the numbers training on an evening continue to rise, the club has been presented with a welcome problem – there are too many athletes on the track at one time.

This means that we aren’t able to offer the premium coaching service that we would like and also that there could be a serious health and safety issue.

At the last meeting of coaches it was suggested that the club operates a tiering or block system as at sports centres and the larger athletic clubs and this idea met with approval from all coaches present. After much discussion and re-organisation here is the new training timetable:

From Thursday 3 November 2005 the new block system for training will begin.

Check with your coach or at the registration table to find out when you will be training.

Here are the new times:

JUNIORS/EARLY SESSIONS

6pm – Club Open

Junior multi-discipline squads

6.15-6.30pm

Warm up for junior multi-discipline squads

6.30 to 7.15pm

Junior multi-discipline squads with respective coaches

7.15pm

Junior multi-discipline squads finish

INTERMEDIATES/ SENIORS & OTHER LATE SESSIONS

6.45pm

Warm up

Juniors are still taking precedence

7.15pm

Track and infield available

Athletes will not be able to take part in both sessions as this defeats the object of splitting the times and it is equally important that older athletes allow the junior groups this uninterrupted use of the track.

This double session will allow the younger athletes to train on the track safely and to receive more individual coaching, the younger athletes will be able to go home earlier and to prepare for the next day’s school, the older athletes will have more space on the track and will not be worried about running in to the youngsters, more coaches will be available for the later sessions and the club will be able to add  another sprints hurdles group for older athletes, another long throws group and heavy throws coach and a high jump group to the groups that already meet.

Please be patient whilst this new system 'beds in' and if you are not sure at which time you should be training - ask your coach.

Letter to the Tamworth Herald from Cllr E Rowe Friday, November 4 2005

Perhaps I can 'mop up' after the MUPA saga by congratulating Ian Osborn and his army of resident remonstrators against this play area for Amington's younger generation, resulting in 70-plus letters being sent to the school governors, guaranteeing their attention and bringing about the desired decision to 'scupper' the plans completely.
I thank him for his suggestions as to alternative sites, one of which is a nature reserve and such a change of use would not, I am sure, be allowed. The other site which he mentions, namely an area between Kerria Road and Mercian Way has, in fact, already been suggested as a 'possible' site and no doubt further detailed discussions will ensue.
I must say that I find it very difficult to believe that 70-plus people can really be so uncharitable towards the local youngsters. Okay, so they don't want any sign, sight or sound of playgrounds within a sizeable radius of their own homes - some folks are like that, some are not. That's life!
I wonder, though, would the objectors be more kindly disposed towards supporting an existing facility, run by a group of people who really do care.
There are a number of groups within the borough whose main aim is to provide worthwhile pursuits for young people. Members of these groups struggle on tirelessly, giving their time and energy to a cause which they see as beneficial to local youngsters.
Not only do they receive excellent training in their chosen sport/ pastime, but are also open to the influences of a more acceptable code of conduct for living within the community - something which we would all agree is a good thing.

However, there is always the age-old problem - that of shortage of financial backing.
Tamworth Athletics Club in Marlborough Way, Glascote, is one such facility. This club has plans for a new purpose built addition to the present building, but, having been refused lottery funding, must look towards raising funds elsewhere.
I am sure that if just a few of the 70 plus objectors could make a gesture to show that they do really care, deep-down, about the well-being of Tamworth's younger generation by sending a donation, payable to the Tamworth Athletics Club, c/o 34 Park Lane, Bonehill, Tamworth, B78 3HZ, this would indeed benefit a great number of young people for many years to come.
Perhaps some parents would be interested in their own off-spring joining such a club. If so, please get in touch. We all know that when young people get bored, they get into mischief. So, find them something worthwhile and fun to do!
  Cllr Evelyn Rowe, Amington.
