80th Birthday Celebrations for TAC Stalwart Monday, November 20 2006

Alf Stokes' 80th Birthday

Tamworth AC’s race walking coach and top race walking official Alf Stokes celebrated his 80th birthday at a surprise party held in the clubhouse at the Marlborough Way Stadium. Over 100 club members , family, friends and fellow race walkers and officials from across the Midlands attended to celebrate the occasion.

Alf  is the only founder member of the club from 1974 who is still an active member and who  coaches weekly at the club and regularly officiates at race walking competitions in the Midlands and further afield.

It is more than 30 years since Alf Stokes, who was the captain of Birmingham Walking Club in 1974,  became a member of a steering committee that was elected on 15th March 1974 by a Public Meeting to draw up a constitution and set into motion the formation of a local Athletics Club in Tamworth. Tamworth AC was formed by a number of like minded people following on from Dave Black’s Commonwealth Games success in the 10,000m.

The inaugural meeting was held on 26th April and Alf was elected as Vice Chairman of the newly formed Club's Management Committee.

Over 50 athletes were at the first training night in May 1974 and were welcomed to the club by Alf who was one of the three coaches at this first training session. The club reached a membership of 283 in the first two years, a figure that now stands at almost 400, with Alf very active during this time. In April 1976 Alf was again elected as Vice-Chairman and in June moved up to Chairman when the existing Chairman left the District.

Over the years he has continued to coach at the club producing some very good walkers including Welsh International Mark Williams and at a personal level competed in cross country, cycling and race walking competitions. Alf, who is a life member of Tamworth AC, is one of a select band of ‘Centurions’ which means he has competitively walked 100 miles in 24 hours in Great Britain: a tremendous feat of endurance.

Alf Stokes has shown over the years his dedication to the club and race walking in particular and the club is sure this will continue well into the future.

Thanks to Kevin Wood, Mark and Karen Williams and everyone else who was involved in the organisation of the 80th party. Keeping it a secret from Alf required all the guile of an MI5 officer!

West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League Perry Park

The second race in the West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country series took place at Perry Park in Birmingham and Tamworth Athletic Club maintained their strong position in the league when they finished 5th overall from 19 teams only a handful of points behind Birchfield in 3rd place.

The performance of the day once again was from the under 13 boys’ team who extended their lead at the top of the under 13 section with excellent races from all the athletes. The first boy home for Tamworth this time was Kristian Edwards who finished 2nd in the race with Anthony Parkes in 5th. They were ably supported by Richard Mahoney who was 12th.  Only 9 seconds separated 2nd from 12th in a very close race.

Sam Greenbank was the next athlete home and he ran well in his first race for the club when he completed the course in 44th. It was Aidan Blythe’s first race as well and he too performed admirably in 48th with Jack Childs 51st and Ricky Hawkes 52nd and James Thacker 58th. Jack must be congratulated on finishing the race as he suffered severe breathing problems whilst in 10th position but was able to complete the course so that the team gained valuable points.

Antony and Kristian are both tied in 1st place in the overall placings in this section.

The under 11 girls also competed magnificently and are in 4th place overall just behind the second placed club. Newcomer to the sport Jessica Hirst ran superbly when she finished 6th one place ahead of Eloise Redfern. Jessica was 15 places higher than in the first race and shows great promise for the future. Bethany Puffett, still relatively new to the event, ran well to record 27th with Chloe Williams in 64th, Rebecca Bradford 68th and Sam Lawton 70th. Sam Brady was 86th and Roseanne Childs, just returning to running after a major operation in 91st. Second place is certainly within the grasp of this team if they continue to perform in this manner.

The under 11 boys are lying in 5th place but once again only just behind the second placed team. Ellis Cross came out on top for the club on this occasion with an excellent 3rd place just in front of Oliver Wood in 5th. Robert Stroud was carrying an injury and he finished in 25th with Ryan Christian in 52nd and Oliver Williscroft completing the team in 62nd. Cross country is a team race with all members of the team counting in the final placings and it is good to see so many athletes producing good performances for their team.

The under 13 girls’ team has been hit by injury this year and haven’t yet been able to field a full team but the athletes that have turned out have ran well for the club. On this occasion Leanne Lewis was the first home in 66th with Lauren Bignall in 79th and Sophie Oldfield in 96th. If more athletes turn out to support the above in this section, the club would move up the tables considerably.

It’s a similar story in the under 15 girls with only 3 athletes representing the club but all 3 recorded good finishes in difficult circumstances. Nicole King, improving with every race, was 43rd and Elyse Jinks 62nd winning the personal battle with Laura Lewis 64th on this occasion.

Tamworth had 6 runners in the under 17 ladies’ section and this in itself must be a first for the club and consequently they are in 5th place in the league just behind the third placed team, Birchfield Harriers. Megan Jacobs 22nd won her personal battle with Jade Lepla 24th on this occasion. These 2 athletes were well supported by Clare Hedderman 37th, Joanna Snowden 41st, Alyson Byrd 39th and Katie Barker in 40th. It is gratifying to see so many athletes willing to turn out for the club in this age group, an age at which most clubs are finding it difficult to retain athletes. Thank you ladies.

The under 15 boys race was the usual battle between Stephen Parkes, Luke Roughley and Matthew Wood but this time Matt was the first home for the club in 10th with Stephen 11th and Luke 13th. Jacob Hughes had his best race since joining the club and he was 34th with Adam McGee completing the team in 52nd.

The team are lying in 5th place overall once again just behind the second place team.

The under 17 men turned out in force and consolidated their 5th position with  all athletes improving on their performances in the last race. Steve Deeley moved up to 9th but was chased hard on this occasion by Steve Harris in 12th and Joe Saddington 18th. Sam Micklewright was some 17 places higher than last time in 30th and Jackson Green running well to finish 43rd in his first race on the country for the club.

If more athletes would turn out in the club’s weaker age groups the club would fulfil its promise of becoming one of the major forces in cross country in the Midlands and so if anyone is interested in cross country and would like to help the club achieve this aim please contact Chris by emailing tamworthac@aol.com or visit the club website at tamworthac.co.uk. Weekly induction sessions take place every Tuesday and Thursday evening in the clubhouse at the Town Stadium at 7pm. All juniors are welcome to attend but must be accompanied by an adult.

Early Session Changes Saturday, November 18 2006

There has been a change to the 6pm sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays for younger athletes.

John Graves' squad have now all moved up to the later session at 7pm , as is the custom at this time of year, but there has been no change to Jonathan Christian's squad which will continue training at the early session of 6pm as usual.

New, younger athletes entering the club through Induction will usually join Jonathan's squad at 6pm as usual.

Coaches and coaching assistants who help out at the early sessions should support Jonathan's squad throughout the winter and spring after which at least 4 more squads will be opened up for the summer.

Please contact Andy or Chris is you have any questions regarding these changes. See us on club nights or email tamworthac@aol.com

Relay Runners Rise to the Challenge Saturday, November 18 2006
Tamworth Athletic Club entered teams in the National Cross Country Relays Championships for the first time for many years and the athletes responded very well to the situation.

The event is held over short distances on a very fast course to ensure it remains exciting.

The under-13s boys' team had the best result of the day when they finished in a magnificent eighth place, the club's best-ever result in a national cross country competition.

The team of Kristian Edwards, Jack Childs and Richard Mahoney have been sweeping all before them on the local circuit and it was encouraging to see them carry this form onto the national stage.

Richard's time of 7:18mins for the 2km course placed him just outside the top ten in his age group.

The under-15s girls' team of Nicole King, Amy Williams and Elyse Jinks also performed well on their national debuts to complete the course in 57th position.

The under-15s boys' trio of Matt Wood, Simon Watson and Luke Roughley acquitted themselves well in completing the course as the 49th team home.

The final teams to represent the club were in the under-17s men's category and Tamworth had the depth of talent to enter two teams in this group.

The A team of Simon King, Steve Harris and Steve Deeley finished 24th, with the B team of Sam King, Joe Saddington and Sam Micklewright in 54th.

Kristian is Club's New Fell Running King Saturday, November 18 2006
Tamworth AC's young star Kristian Edwards is continuing the tradition of young athletes from the club being successful in fell racing competitions.

Fell running is a discipline that requires high concentration and determination in order to overcome the difficult terrain.

Kristian, who also represents the club in cross country and Sportshall Athletics, showed just what a talented all rounder he is by taking a superb second place in the under-12s section of the challenging English Fell Running Championships.

On a warm autumn morning in Keighley, Edwards pulled out all the stops over the mile-and-a-half course to finish two seconds behind winner Rory Addison. With another year to compete in this age group Kristian is certainly 'one to watch' for the future.

Edwards was back in West Yorkshire a week later at a hill race in Howarth. The testing mile-long course, which included 150ft of climbing, saw Edwards forging his way in and out of two quarries to take yet another second place in 7:12mins.

Meanwhile, senior athlete Steve Deegan took a creditable 24th place in the gruelling Worcester Beacon fell race, which runs from Malvern town centre to the top of the Malvern Hills and back down again.

For more information on fell and cross country running for junior and senior athletes, call Chris on 01827 287177.

Impressive Return For Senior X Country Team Saturday, November 11 2006
Newly-promoted Tamworth Athletic Club made a successful return to Division Two of the highly competitive Birmingham League when they finished seventh in the first meeting of the year.

The race was held at Senneleys Park in Birmingham, which has a reputation as one of the most testing courses in the Midlands.

The Tamworth team made light work of the conditions, including the infamous stream.

They seemed oblivious to the controversy that has raged over the past year in the athletic press surrounding the continued inclusion of the stream.

Fortunately, sense prevailed and the course continued to take the form of previous years.

For the second year running, men's team manager Tom Orton did an excellent job of producing a men's team to run for the club.

Andy Wright showed the value of having taken part in several fell races in the summer finishing in 22nd position with Carl Dunne not too far behind in 35th place, in his first cross country outing for Tamworth AC.

Paul Tasker showed his tremendous value to the club by coming 44th closely chased home by Martin Naunton, Dave Williams (55th) and Howard Bush (57th).

The club performance of the day came from Nigel Fisher who has made great progress over the summer and he showed this improvement in finishing 87th only being beaten by evergreen Steve Deegan (86th) on the line.

Michael Pierrepoint picked up a leg injury early on in the race but he battled on bravely to complete the course in 116th.

The next race in the series is on December 2 at Leamington, when it is hoped that all senior cross country runners will make themselves available.

World Class Talent Programme For Tamworth Two Friday, November 3 2006
Tamworth Ac stars Meghan Beesley (pictured left) and Nathan Woodward are on a list of 77 young athletes who will receive lottery support as part of the World Class Talent programme.

The pair have been identified as potential future Olympians and joined their fellow young stars at an introductory meeting at Loughborough last weekend.

There they met with mentors such as Daley Thompson, Katharine Merry and Steve Backley, where they were given advice on training, preparation, lifestyle, physical conditioning and dealing with the media.

Beesley, meanwhile, is also part of a Combined Events National Squad of 32 headed by Commonwealth champions Dean Macey and Kelly Sotherton, as well as new multi-event star Jessica Ennis.

She will receive advice from specialist advisors such as long jump coach Darrell Bunn, who was coach to former Olympic champion Denise Lewis.

UK under-17s 300m hurdles record holder Beesley is yet to decide on her long term ambition - whether to compete in the heptathlon or focus on an individual event like the 400m hurdles or 200m.

"I will be looking to improve at some of the disciplines during the winter," Beesley said. "I really need to work on the shot put and have to get some consistency in the javelin and high jump.

"I am going to keep my options open but the aim is to compete at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and, of course, the London Games in 2012."

TAC Club Chairman Lands Top National Role Friday, November 3 2006
The chairman of Tamworth Athletics Club has been chosen to chair a new national governing body designed to reorganise grass roots athletics.

John Graves has been elected the first chairman of the England Athletics Council - a vitally important job as the sport looks to find stars of the future before the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Graves has impressed as chairman of the West Midlands Regional committee and will now set his sights on his two main aims - bringing more people into the sport, either as athletes, coaches or volunteers, and improving performance across all age groups.

"I became involved in the England Athletics re-organisation because I am passionate about the need for athletes and athletics at the grass-roots to receive more support if our sport is to progress and not wither on the vine," said Graves, who is involved as a team manager, committee member and coach to a group of endurance athletes at Tamworth AC.

"Many thousands of volunteers are attempting to work with athletes and do not have the tools available to ensure success.

"I saw the formation of a decentralised body with support given at regional level as an opportunity to focus resources at the point of need which will lead to an improvement in performance at every level and an increase in coaches, officials and other volunteers.

"I am convinced that, for our sport to be successful, the needs of the athletes and the clubs must be a priority in order to ensure improvement in performance at any level.

"The higher the quality of the base, the higher the quality of the peak!

"This can only be achieved by delivery and support at a local level and will include clubs and counties as agents of delivery.

"As chair of the England Athletics Council my priority will be to ensure that athletes and the sport of athletics are given the support necessary to achieve success."

Interim chairman of the Council, Peter Radcliffe, said he was delighted to hand over control to Graves.

"I has been my aim to hand over to a leader who has the real ability to make a difference to Athletics in England," he said

"I am convinced that John is well-equipped to be a successful, enabling leader of our sport."

Graves, a retired teacher, first started in athletics at the Lincolnshire cross-country championships in 1961 with Boston AC.

He was a club runner at middle distance and steeplechase before turning to road running, cross-country and fell running until the late 1970s.

Tamworth AC is one of the few clubs in the country that owns, manages and maintains its own facility.
