Further details to come.

TAC need a representative to attend this meeting on behalf of the club and the two teams.

Important announcement over the page.

Hi everyone,

I have decided that I shall no longer be able to be the organiser, team manger for the West Midlands Young Athletes league next year due to pressure of work and Chris and I would also like to spend more time with our grandchildren at weekends.

If anyone is interested in taking on this role, which is not too onerous, then now would be the ideal time to work with me over the final events of this season to see how things work.

Unlike track and field, there are no selection headaches as you just try to get as many people to turn out as possible. Names are sent in at the beginning of the season with additions allowed up to the Tuesday before each race during the season. These additions are accepted by email with payment being made on the Sunday. Its £1 per athlete for the whole season. Please let me know asap if interested.

Ps. It’s an ideal job share opportunity for someone!

Jog England at TAC Update Tuesday, November 27 2007

Jog England is a new nationwide initiative encouraging adults to become more active and to tackle the risk of illnesses, such as heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and obesity by joining and taking part in a recreational running group for adults. Tamworth AC is delighted to have been selected to run a pilot project at the Town Stadium, Marlborough Way, Tamworth.

Now that the first set of Tamworth Jog England joggers are 5 weeks into their training programme, its time to see how they are progressing and what benefits the joggers are experiencing  from being involved in the pilot project.

Two of the first joggers to sign up for the pilot project hosted by Tamworth AC were Katrina Sargeant and Sharon Gardiner. Both were relative novices to jogging and both wanted to find a way of keeping fit that didn’t involve gym work and where they could meet with like-minded people and also share a well organised and planned jogging and fitness session with others.

When asked why she had started on the Jog England programme Katrina Sargeant said Like most people I wanted to get fit and started to jog on my own, however I found it difficult to keep up the enthusiasm when it was just me.  When I joined the Jog England group I thought I would be out of my depth, but the standard is mixed, and the way the sessions are handled we all get a good work out.  The people who run the group and all the members are very friendly and now that we have been jogging for 5 weeks another member and I jog together on another night so that we keep up the good work.  I would recommend anyone who wishes to start to keep fit but who does not want to start on their own to join.  Everyone is given encouragement  which makes it so much easier”.

The novice joggers who signed up for the first 10 week block of Jog England sessions  have all put a huge effort into their weekly group training sessions on Tuesday evenings at the Marlborough Way Stadium, with some even requesting additional training! Several new joggers have already expressed an interest in or signed up for the next 10 week programme in January.

For those who may be concerned that the Jog England programme is just for ‘athletic types’ here is a simple breakdown of what happens in a session. The weekly session plans include warm up's, the main activity phase of walking/jogging, cool down's and stretch sets tailored to the needs of joggers with differing abilities or health requirements. There really is something for everyone.

The majority of the sessions take place away from the stadium with the occasional one planned for the track or the surrounding hills.

The joggers are led by the Tamworth Jog England leaders who were fortunate to be trained by
senior coach Bernie Campbell from Glasgow who shared his many years of experience in leading jogging groups in Scotland. The group were put through their paces in a packed day of theory and practical sessions and all Tamworth AC’s delegates successfully completed the course.

The Tamworth jog leaders, led by Jackie Wakeman, are well trained and enthusiastic and are greatly encouraged by the progress and commitment of the present group who will no doubt be signing up for the second set of sessions planned for January 2008.

If you want to get fit or improve your fitness levels find out more about the current Jog England programme or the next 10 week Jog England block starting in January 2008. Email Jackie at jogengland@tamworthac.co.uk or Chris at  tamworthac@aol.com for further details.

Rising TAC Star Scoops Another Award Wednesday, November 21 2007

Two rising stars scooped top prizes at the Warwickshire Schools Sports Awards at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

The awards are held annually to celebrate the achievements of individuals, schools and volunteers throughout Warwickshire.

Nathan Woodward – the No. 1 ranked Under-19s 400m hurdler in Europe and World School Games bronze medallist – was voted the sports person of the year among secondary school students.

Holly Scott earned the female award after finishing first with sailing partner Anna MacKenzie from Cumbria in The Mirror World Championships 2007 in South Africa – the first female champions.

Roger Davis, National Director for the National Council for School Sport, presented both Coleshill School students with their Ricoh Awards.

Coventry City defender Marcus Hall presented the prizes to the winners of the primary and secondary schools teams.

Former Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers striker Gavin Peacock, who is now an analyst on Match of the Day 2, was the MC for the evening which attracted over 300 guests.

Colin Naismith, from Southern Warwickshire School Sport Partnership, said a total of 28 awards were handed out in 12 categories.

“The Warwickshire Schools Sports Awards signify the achievement and dedication of pupils across the county,” he said.

“As ever, it was a difficult choice for the judges because there were some outstanding performances but Nathan and Holly shone out in particular.

“These awards also recognise the achievements of our young disabled athletes who have shown exceptional ability and determination to succeed.

“This is a celebration of sport and it is fantastic to be able to acknowledge some of the unsung volunteers who give up hours and hours of their spare time to help youngsters pursue their interest in their particular sport.

“It was a wonderful evening and the Southern Warwickshire School Sport Partnership would like to congratulate all the winners and those who were highly commended.”

Julie Graham, Head of Sales at the Ricoh Arena, said the venue had sponsored the Ricoh Award.

“The trophy will be engraved each year with the name of the winner so Nathan and Holly are the first teenagers to have their names on there,” she said.

“It was the second successive year the organisers have held this event in the E.ON Lounge and we hope to see them again in 2008.”

Roll of honour for the 2007 winners at the Warwickshire Schools Sports Awards:

TAC Due Put on World Class List Wednesday, November 21 2007
Tamworth Athletics Club stars Meghan Beesley and Nathan Woodward remain busy during the winter as they prepare for next year's World Junior Championships in Poland.

The pair have both been placed on the World Class Talent Programme, designed to support athletes who have the potential to make the podium at a senior international championship in seven to ten years.

Beesley has been selected for the national squad for sprints and hurdles although she has been left out of the multi-events squad.

Her coach Trevor Marsay said: "Meghan will be focusing on the 400m hurdles ready for the World Juniors next year.

"On saying that she will be keeping her hand in with the multi-events as well.

"We are going to look at doing a pentathlon at Sheffield in January where the aim will be to go for 4,000 plus points.

"After that we will aim for the Midland Senior Indoors at the NIA where the aim will be to compete in the 60m or 200m.

"Things are going well at the moment, Meghan is injury-free and looking forward to the challenges that next year will bring."

400m hurdles runner Woodward, meanwhile, says he has stepped up his training this winter.

He said: "I am currently doing five sessions a week and am working a lot more on my hurdle technique.

"Things have been going really well and I will be going down to see David Hemery (the former Olympic gold medallist) again for some advice in the next couple of weeks.

"All my focus is geared towards the World Juniors next year.

"I haven't set myself any particular target for Poland yet. I will see how things go in the winter.

"But I am obviously looking to better my personal best of 51.5secs. I think I could have run a lot faster last season if circumstances had been different and I hadn't been hit by injuries."

Woodward is still revelling in his success in being crowned Young Sportsman of the Year at the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Sports Awards recently.

"It is nice to win trophies and medals," he said,

"It makes you determined to enjoy more and more success."

TAC Make Their Mark on Mansfield Wednesday, November 21 2007
The under-13 boys team took pride of place for Tamworth AC when they finished 13th at the Eighth Saucony English Cross Country Relay Championships at Berry Hill Park in Mansfield, writes Chris Graves.

The course has a reputation for being extremely well designed and managed with maximum use made of the hills and the softer, drier areas within the woods being ideal for a fast course.

Each year more than 1,000 teams from across England enter the ten Championship races on the day and, as last year, the English Cross Country Association used ankle chips to electronically record athletes' positions and times.

First off for the under-13 boys three man relay team was Anthony Parkes, who crossed the line, over 2km, in a very good 16th place with a time 7.18mins.

He handed over to relative newcomer Ben Wright who worked hard for 19th position in 7.37mins.

Kristian Edwards delivered the fastest stage of the race when he brought the team home in an excellent 13th in 7.02mins.

The overall time for Tamworth's A team was 21.57mins against the winning team's time of 20.52mins.

In the same age group, Oliver Smith and Oliver Wood competed in the B team.

Smith, from North Warwickshire, was the quickest, and still one of the newest athletes at the club clocking 7.19mins for a very good 18th place.

Wood crossed the line in 7.49mins for a solid 27th place on his stage of the relay.

The under-15 boys were pipped into 21st place overall by London-based club Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers but managed to beat the much larger Notts AC.

Stephen Parkes took the first leg of the 2km relay and was Tamworth's lead runner in 14th place in 6.35mins.

Much improved Jack Childs ran a time of 7.07mins to take 24th which gave Luke Roughley the opportunity of running 6.48mins to finish in 21st.

The under-17 men ran a distance of 3km and Matt Wood ran a little too enthusiastically, leading the whole field for half of the course.

The exuberant start certainly affected his time and he finished in 64th in a time of 10.30mins.

Steve Deeley climbed ten places on the second leg, completing the run in 10.23mins.

Sam Micklewright ran quicker this week and his 10.53mins enabled the team to eventually finish in 57th position.

Joe Saddington has recently returned from injury and his 11mins for the B team shows much promise for the rest of the year.

The under-13 girls were all at the lower end of the age group and to finish in 53rd overall in the 2km race was an excellent achievement.

Ellie Redfern ran the first leg in 8.28mins for 50th with Jasmine Oliver running her best race for some time in 9.09mins.

Jessica Hirst was only just old enough to compete and her 8.53mins showed great potential for the future.

Lauren Mann was the only under-15 girl to take part and her run of 7.50mins showed great character as it is very difficult to give a 100 per cent effort if your team mates fail to turn out.

The final team to take part were the under-17 ladies and they too were unable to field a full team of three with only Amy Williams and Elise Jinks taking part.

Both girls had good runs with Williams completing the 3km course in 11.02mins and Jinks e in 11.18mins over the 2.5km course.

The next race for the juniors is the West Midlands Young Athletes League on Sunday at Redditch.

Athletics Action is Set to Move Indoors Tuesday, November 6 2007
Tamworth Ac is gearing up for another winter of Norwich Union Sportshall Athletics.

The fun indoor scheme provides an effective first step into the world of traditional track and field athletics.

Many of the current UK track and field stars started their careers in NU Sportshall Athletics including athletes such as Kelly Sotherton, Jessica Ennis and Tamworth AC's very own Meghan Beesley and Nathan Woodward.

Tamworth AC will compete against several local Midland clubs in the Birmingham Sportshall League over the course of four matches, all held at the Stockland Green sportshall, Birmingham.

As well as local pride, clubs will be competing for age group titles and the overall championship title.

Tamworth's athletes will then fly the flag for Birmingham at the Regional Finals against counties from the West Midlands.

Since the club joined the league it has succeeded each year in having at least three athletes selected for the National Finals held at the National Indoor Arena.

The most successful year was 2006-07 when Tamworth AC's Sophie Taylor, Matt Browne and Tom Challis competing as part of the Birmingham team which won all the national age group titles across the board, something that had never been achieved before!

The club is hoping to keep it's success rolling as more newcomers join the experienced sportshall athletes.

The age range for competition is under-11s (who must be at least nine years of age), under-13s and under-15s.

Tamworth expect its sportshall athletes in these age groups to take part in at least three of the competitions over the winter season.

Events include short and long sprints, relays, shot putt, standing and vertical jumps, and speed bounce.

The best competitors at under-13s and under-15s will be selected to represent Birmingham in the West Midlands Regional Final in February, and then possibly the National Final in April, both fantastic events!

For the first time Sportshall Athletics is coming to local Tamworth schools.

There will be competitions in the Belgrave cluster of primary schools that will lead to a Year five and Year six Cluster Festival.

The winning team from this event will represent Tamworth Schools in the Staffordshire Schools Final.

If this proves to be successful, as it has in other parts of the country, further initiatives will be rolled out to other primary schools in the area.

To find out more about sportshall athletics, call 01827 260897 or 287177, or email
tamworthac@aol.com .

Last Gasp Call Gives Tamworth New Hope Tuesday, November 6 2007

Five Tamworth AC cross country runners were staring automatic relegation to the Division Three in the face at Senneleys Park, Birmingham, as they did not have the required six runners.

Quick thinking on behalf of team manager Tom Orton, with back up from his team mates, resulted in contact being made with Tamworth AC runner Mark Waplington.

Waplington, who had been barely able to walk earlier in the week, had just pulled on his drive but by the end of the call he was back in his car and heading for Senneleys Park the goal of saving the club's season.

He arrived just in time as the senior men's section of the Birmingham League kicked off at what is regarded as the traditional curtain raiser at Senneleys Park.

Despite the unusual start for the local club and the number of notable absentees due to holidays and illness, Tamworth AC made a solid beginning to the league campaign on a difficult course.

The team was lead home by Dave Williams, followed closely by team manager Tom Orton as the second counter for the club.

Steve Deegan showed his usual true grit to take third place for Tamworth with new squad member Luke Taylor in fourth and Nigel Fisher in fifth.

Waplington brought the team home and together the squad ensured they were set up for the rest of the campaign.
(As a thank you for saving the day, the club registration team have agreed to waive the outstanding training fees of £2.23p accumulated over the last 2 or 3 sessions by Tamworth's hero, Wappy)!!

During the race a quirky incident took place when Dave Williams was announced to the Senneleys crowd over the tannoy as a pole vaulter during his second lap. This was made even funnier by the fact that it was Tom Orton that passed the announcer's box at that point and anyone knowing them would know that there is no way Dave is that ugly!

Orton will want to see all possible runners at Coughton Park, Coventry, for the second fixture on Saturday, December 1 as Tamworth go for a place in the top half of the league.

For details on training and competition for cross country and road running at Tamworth AC, contact Tom via email at sharon.tom@tamworthac.co.uk or Chris at tamworthac@aol.com .
