December 2006

There's No Rest For Town Runners Friday, December 29 2006
There's no Christmas respite for Tamworth's AC's top runners.
All the athletes who wish to be successful train throughout the year - no matter what the weather conditions.
Sometimes they will have a well earned rest over the Christmas period but even this will be planned into their training programmes.
Most of the younger athletes train twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at this time of the year.
Some of the cross-country and fell runners also meet up on Saturday mornings for a longer run on hilly ground.
Coupled with regular competitions such as those offered by the West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League and the Birmingham and Staffordshire Sportshall Leagues, the young athletes do not require any further training.Indeed, over training can have a detrimental effect upon performance.
However, as the athletes reach 16, as with senior athletes, more rigorous training is required if they wish to progress to higher levels of competition.
So what do the dedicated athletes do in the winter and over the Christmas and New Year holiday season?

Do they put aside their spikes for their slippers?

Do they become couch potatoes for two weeks?

Recent winner at the BBC Midlands Sports Awards, Nathan Woodward is just one of Tamworth AC's talented track athletes who will be working on an individual programme set up with his coach Matt Hargreaves and the added advice of ex-Olympic champion hurdler David Hemery.Woodward intends to take a few days off over the main Christmas holiday.

But he will soon be back in training.
"When I am training it will be a mixture of long fartleks, repetitions of 400s and 800s with a limited recovery," he said.
"Usually my sessions are followed by a circuit session.

"I shall also be doing hurdle drills and hurdle mobility and speed sessions with hurdles incorporated into the session."

Woodward trains at the Marlborough Way stadium on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sunday mornings and will be looking towards National and International competitions in his age group in the coming year.
This is the time of year when all athletes, irrespective of event, will be taking part in general conditioning programmes that will be seeking to improve their endurance, strength, power, speed and technique.
Programmes will be designed to address any weakness that each individual may have.
Early in the New Year the work changes so that more specific conditioning work is undertaken and differs according to the event that is being followed.
During the winter months endurance athletes take the opportunity to improve their aerobic capacity by undertaking longer runs.
But they will also be working on their speed endurance by running very fast shorter distances with very little recovery so that their bodies can adapt to running at a faster pace.
Endurance athlete Andy Wright from Baddesley Ensor is just one such senior.Wright, a good cross-country, fell and marathon runner, is setting his sights on the London Marathon in Spring 2007.
When asked about his winter training, he said: "I am currently running most days before work for between 45 and 60 minutes.
"I also have a specific session on the grass in Baddesley on a Saturday and a long Sunday run of between 90 and 120 minutes which typically takes me out over towards Hartshill Hayes.

"If the weather is particularly bad then I will stick to a road run and stay clean.
"My morning runs at this time of year tend to be on the hilly side, staying in Baddesley to use the hills.

"It can be monotonous at times, especially if it is wet, but it is necessary if I am to run inside 2.30hrs again in the London Marathon.

"Over the festive period, I hope to take the opportunity of the time off work and include an additional midweek grass session in the village - not to mention a few lie-ins!

"Come late January I will be ramping up the miles, start to put in a couple of additional evening runs and change the Saturday grass to a specific marathon training session on the roads.

"Hopefully I will be able to fit some track training into the schedule from February.

"I won't be racing over Christmas, I never have, it is the one time of year that I like to spend time at home with the family, relaxing, walking, eating and no doubt a few beers."
Wright plans to do the County Cross-Country Championships and will also be running for Tamworth.
Race walking is yet another endurance event and Tamworth AC is fortunate to have Welsh international Mark Williams as a competing member.
Williams describes his training schedule in his own words: "a quick training break to recharge the batteries, then down to some serious winter training to prepare for 2007.

"I have lots of long sessions pencilled in, maybe 30km on Sunday morning - 45km if I'm feeling really brave!

"I do 5x2km efforts on Monday, 40 laps of the track on Tuesday evening, 10x1km efforts on Wednesdays and a four x 5km session on Thursday.

"I then swim and bike on Friday and I'm back on the track on Saturdays for 20x400m runs.

"I also do some cross training, core strength, flexibility drills, technique training.

"All too easily all that work put in can be undone in a week over Christmas.

"The art is to enjoy Christmas, but be sensible - not easy I must admit, and I have learnt by making the odd mistake in the past.

"Carrying an extra few pounds in a 20km race early season and how that feels is a good reminder of why you need to remember to train, eat, drink, and rest well over Christmas - and still have a great time.

"As usual now I shall be training through Christmas and the New Year, some hard sessions, some easy sessions and some fun sessions, but they all count.

"I have a time trial on our 9km road circuit scheduled in for Christmas Day and a five mile race on New Year's day."

Although the winter season is upon us, Tamworth's athletes are still training for the track and field season and others, such as Midland medallist Tom Challis, are preparing for the indoor season which will be starting in earnest in January.
The club's younger athletes usually take part in more general work on training nights that will improve their core skills of running, throwing, jumping, speed, agility and balance.
Anyone from eight years upwards who is interested in any athletic events  should call Chris on tamworthac@aol.com.

Driving on the Footpath Wednesday, December 27 2006

DRIVING ON THE FOOTPATH

Please DO NOT drive cars on the public footpath as you leave the car park.

Not only is this illegal but it is dangerous

and is depositing mud over the public footpath.

If you park on the grassed area by the new entrance please leave enough space for a single front row of cars only. These cars can then leave without having to use the footpath.

Double Victory for Williams Friday, December 15 2006
Race walker Mark Williams secured two victories for a depleted Tamworth team at the second Midland Winter League fixture held at Perry Park.

Suffering the effects of a cold, Williams still claimed victories in the both the men's 5km and 10km events, leaving him in a strong position to retain both titles this season with one fixture remaining.

In the 5km race, Williams settled in behind the leading group of five athletes over the opening 500m before taking up the lead.

In blustery conditions, he gradually pulled clear of the field, easing over the closing stages to record a comfortable win in a time of 23.27mins.

Tamworth's youngest athlete, Christian Jones-Lyndon then completed another fine performance to take second place in the boys under-11s 1km development race.

Williams was back in action in the final event of the day, the 10km walk.

He increased the pace on lap six, putting daylight between himself and the chasing athletes and eventually easing to victory in 51.24mins.

Beesley Wins in Glasgow Friday, December 15 2006
Tamworth Ac star Meghan Beesley produced a stunning finish to claim victory at a Great Britain Schools multi-event international at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow.

Representing English Schools, Beesley lay fourth going into the final event of the pentathlon, the 800m.

But she destroyed the field with a new personal best time of 2.18.48mins to turn the competition on its head.

Earlier, she had run the 60m hurdles in 8.80secs, leapt 5.52m in the long jump, high jumped 1.56m and threw the shot 7.72m.

Beesley's score of 3,572 was enough to put her fourth on the UK all-time rankings for under-17s.

"I was really pleased with my 800m run," she said.

"I couldn't really believe it because I knocked six seconds off my personal best.

"The main focus of my training has been running so to do well in the hurdles and 800m was good.

"The other events went a little bit pear shaped and did not quite go to plan.

"But I'm looking to work on the technical events a bit more in the next few weeks."

Beesley's main focus for 2007 will be the European Junior Championships where she will concentrate on the 400m hurdles.

Young Athletes Maintain Team Place in WMYACCL Friday, December 15 2006

The third race in the West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League series  was held on an extremely cold day over a very fast course at Newbold Revell.

In spite of absences caused by illness and holidays Tamworth Athletic Club maintained their 5th place out of 19 in a very competitive league.

It was Corrine Blythe’s first race for the club and she ran brilliantly to place 3rd in the under 11 girls’ section with Eloise Redfern not far behind in 10th. Jessica Hirst found the going difficult this time but still completed the course in 23rd. Bethany Puffett ran well to finish 48th with Rebecca Bradford 74th, Sam Lawton 70th, Sam Brady 84th and the diminutive Alisha Arnold 93rd in her first ever race.

The under 11 girls have moved up to an excellent second position overall after this performance. Eloise Redfern is lying in 5th place overall in the individual race.

The under 13 and Under 15 girls teams were severely depleted by sickness with only 2 girls turning out for the club in the under 13’s and 3 in the under 15’s. Leanne Lewis was 86th and Sophie Oldfield improving in every race coming 94th in the under 13’s.

Tamworth’s under 15’s were having their own personal competition and this time Elyse Jinks came out on top in 50th with Lauren Mann 51st and Amy Williams 56th  close behind.

Megan Jacobs and Jade Lepla were in the under 17 Ladies race and Megan finished 20th and Jade 29th.

The under 11 boys were very competitive and in spite of a Sportshall Athletics meeting two nights previously, Robert Stroud ran his best ever race for the club with 2nd place but he was chased hard by Ellis Cross who was 9th. Tamworth AC newcomer Keir Hatton was turning out for the first time and he was 45th, Ryan Christian 54th, Reice Bruton 63rd, Oliver Williscroft 65th and 9 year old Mathew Redfern was 71in his first cross country race for Tamworth .  Ellis Cross now holds 4th place overall and Robert Stroud 7th in the individual competition.

The under 13 boys is the strongest age group in the club at cross country and they once again showed their ability when they extended their lead in first place with another superb team performance.

Kristian Edwards was 3rd in the tightest finish of the day but he was only just in front of Anthony Parkes 6th and Richard Mahony 7th. Jack Childs is still recovering from a chest infection and he ran courageously to be 20th with Aidan Blythe 50th, Sam Greenbank 61st, Ricky Hawkes 62nd and James Thacker 72nd.

After three meetings Kristian Edwards is 1st, Antony Parkes 2nd and Richard Mahoney 5th  overall  in the individual competition.

Stephen Parkes recorded the best finish in the under 15 section when he finished 2nd in a very close race. This moved Stephen up to 3rd overall. Luke Roughley was suffering with stomach cramps and his 20th place was remarkable in the circumstances. Jacob Hughes once again had a good race in 34th with newcomer Stefan Wilson not far behind in 39th.

The final race of the day was the under 17 men’s and once again there was a close race between Tamworth athletes with Steve Deeley taking the honours this time in 7th just taking Simon King before the finish in 8th. Joe Saddington had his usual steady start and his 23rd place was just in front of Steve Harris in 24th. Sam Micklewright was 31st and Jackson Green 45th.

The team moved up to 3rd overall in this category after today’s races.

Cameron Thorne won his 60m in 7.98secs and took second place in the 150m in 18.89 secs.

Jason Powell, in his first races in the under 17 age group, won the 150m in 18.70 secs and came sixth in the 60m in 7.96secs.

Tom Adams , not the steeplechaser, finished in second place in the 600m in a time of 1:37.69 mins.

Tom Burton, in the under 20 men's age group, took fourth place in the 60m in 7.59 secs and the same position in the 150m in 17.54 secs.

Tasker took part in the senior men's 2000m in a very strong field containing some international runners and finished ninth place in a personal best of 6:10.8mins.

Men's Team Keep a Grip in First Year in Division 2 Tuesday, December 5 2006

The second race in the highly competitive Division 2 of the Birmingham Cross Country League series was held at Leamington on a course, parts of which had been under several inches of water earlier in the week. This had made the course extremely heavy and muddy in places and although it looked deceptively easy it was quite testing in places.

Tamworth Athletic Club once again fielded 11 runners and the team remains in 8th place in the 4 race series.

Andy Wright once again led the team home and after a steady start he gradually pulled through the ranks to finish in 24th place.

This was Tom Adams’ first attempt at senior cross country since leaving the junior ranks and he too started slowly over the 10k course eventually completing the race in 48th having caught Paul Tasker just before the finish who was 49th.

Dave Williams and Howard Bush continued with their rivalry and this time Dave was 64th with Howard 68th.

Adie Hall hasn’t run for 12 months because of injury and coped well with the difficult conditions to finish in 94th with the fast finishing Nigel Fisher in 105th.

Michael Pierpoint found the heavy conditions difficult but he did well to record 151st with multi-eventer Matt James chasing Pierpoint hard to the finish and using the race as distance training in 153rd.

Alan Oliver came to the club 12 months ago with his daughter and over the months he has been persuaded to have a go at the longer races. This was probably his first real cross country ever and to complete the course in 173rd was a testament to his perseverance on a very tricky course.

The next race for the senior athletes is the county championships at Leek on January 6th. Forms are available from John at the club.

For information on cross country training and competition for seniors please email Tom at tamworthac@aol.com

Solid Runs in County Event Tuesday, December 5 2006
Eight counties took part in the Schools Inter-counties Cross-Country race at Lilleshall last weekend and Tamworth had four athletes representing Staffordshire.

Rawlett pupil Lauren Mann took part in the junior girls' race and it was her first appearance in a representative race.

She ran well to finish in 61st place in bitterly cold conditions which affected her breathing.

This will have been valuable experience for her at the start of her athletic career.

Lichfield schoolboy Luke Roughley was in the junior boys' section and he had the best result of the day for a Tamworth athlete when he finished in tenth place in a very strong field.

At three miles, this was the longest cross country race in which Luke had taken part and, considering his training had been directed at running two miles, he produced an exceptional performance.

Steve Deeley and Matt Wood, both from Wilnecote High School, represented the town in the intermediate race with superb runs.

Steve had his usual steady start and gradually picked athletes off as he moved through the field to finish in 11th with Matt Wood probably having his best race ever, completing the course in 26th, beating much older boys in the process.

The next race for all Tamworth's junior athletes is the Young Athletes Cross Country at Newbold Revell, Coventry on Sunday, December 10.

If you are interested in cross-country training and competition at both junior or senior level at Tamworth Athletic Club, contact Chris at tamworthac@aol.com.
