Woodward Eyes European Glory Tuesday, February 20 2007
Coleshill hurdles star Nathan Woodward will decide in the next couple of days whether to compete indoors - or focus solely on his outdoor season.

The 400m hurdler has been suffering with a slight hamstring niggle and could, therefore, opt to miss this weekend's Midland Indoor Championships at the NIA.

"I'm not sure about the indoor season yet," said Woodward.

"It might be a case of just solely focusing on training so that I can get ready for the outdoor campaign at the end of April.

"My aim this year is to compete at the European Junior Championships in Holland so I will talk to my coach, Matt Hargreaves, about the best way of preparing for that."

Woodward, meanwhile, admitted he is improving as an athlete all the time since he started working with former Olympic gold medallist David Hemery.

"He has given me a lot of advice but once I master the things he has told me, he finds another area to work on and put into practice," said Woodward.

"At the moment, I am working on how I attack the hurdles and my forward lead into them.

"I can already see my times improving at a quick rate and, hopefully by the time we reach the summer, I will be in tip top shape and ready for the challenges ahead."

Tamworth athletes produced some good performances in the Birmingham Games at the NIA last weekend.

There were personal bests from Milly Kellyman, Laura Langowski, Meghan Beesley, Amy Frith and Matty James.

Kellyman won her under-15 girls 200m race in a personal best time of 27.79secs and took second place in the 60m in 8.28secs - just one hundredth of a second off her personal best for this event.

Langowski won her heat of the senior ladies 200m in 25.87secs and then showed her best form for this time of the year to take second place in the final in a personal best 25.47secs.

Beesley won her 400m under-20 women's race in 56.64secs - the best time in Britain this indoor season - and won her race in the senior ladies 60m in 7.78secs.

Frith took third place in her heat of the senior ladies 400m in an indoor personal best of 58.92secs and another third in the semi-final in 59.32secs.

Olympic Champion Backs Woodward Tuesday, February 20 2007
Olympic great David Hemery believes Tamworth AC star Nathan Woodward has the potential to emulate his own gold medal glory.

Hemery, who won 400m hurdles gold at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, has been providing Woodward and top young hurdler Toby Ulm with advice in recent months.

And, talking exclusively to Herald Sport, he admitted he had been impressed by what he has seen.

"Nathan is a tremendous talent and a great guy," said Hemery, who also won two Commonwealth Games titles.

"The first thing that pleases me is that he has a great coach in Matt Hargreaves who is willing to collaborate with others such as myself.

"In the past, there have been coaches who have had the attitude that they won't allow anyone else to talk to their athlete.

"Matt has put his athlete first and allowed me to get involved and offer advice.

"Nathan is a rangy and raw talent and what is great to see is that he has the willingness and determination to succeed.

"He has a fantastic attitude and that, integrated with his ability, makes him stand out.

"What an athlete needs is a positive attitude even when tired.

"Runners who can hang on in there even when they are hurting become true champions and I see that in both Nathan and Toby Ulm.

"They train together and that gives it a bit of an edge.

"They have good healthy attitudes and stimulate off each other - it's good to have that competitiveness.

"From Nathan's point of view I think he's a bright lad and has got so many good attributes.

"He is aspiring to be an Olympic star of the future, possibly in 2012, and if he maintains his attitude and stays injury free, he has a good future ahead of him."

Jumping Jordan Clinches Crown Tuesday, February 20 2007
Tamworth athlete Jordan Roach produced a fine performance to win the under-15s high jump title at the Midlands Indoor Championships at the Birmingham High Performance Centre on Saturday.

With a previous best of 1.73m, Roach had never before taken part in a championship event but he not only cleared 1.75m for a new personal best but he went on to improve it again to 1.78m to win the event comfortably.

The height is the best achieved in Great Britain by any under-15 boy this indoor season.

Roach, who is coached by high jump coach Mike Dolby now needs to try to retain this top form for the Birmingham Games and the National Indoor Championships at the NIA at the end of the month.

Meghan Beesley also added two more Midland titles to her name when she won the 60m under-20 women's event and the 60m hurdles.

In her 60m heat, Beesley won in 7.68secs, a personal best, and improved this to 7.64secs to comfortably win the final.

In the 60m hurdles, Beesley clinched gold in 8.89secs to gain her second title of the day.

Milly Kellyman, in her first ever major championship, also achieved two good 60m performances.

She finished in third place in her under-15s heat in a personal best time of 8.43secs.

She improved this to 8.27secs in the girls 60m final to gain sixth place.

Athletes Put in Extra Time in Bid For Success Tuesday, February 20 2007
Four Tamworth AC athletes have been busy putting in extra time with specialised high performance training sessions in preparation for future training and competition.

Nathan Woodward, the UK record holder for the under-17 400m hurdles, has been training with David Hemery, the former Olympic champion, with the focus of their latest training day being the approach to the hurdle.

During the previous week, Woodward, as part of his World Class Talent support, attended Loughborough University to meet the UKA strength and conditioning expert for an assessment where he scored 'excellent' in almost everything.

The talented local athlete and his coach Matt Hargreaves both left feeling very pleased with the result - particularly as many of the tests involved exercises that are already incorporated into his training.

Three of Tamworth's talented young athletes were invited to spend the week with the Staffordshire Schools Squads at Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire where they took part in high performance general and event specific training.

All three athletes worked with top coaches. Hammer thrower Alex Berrow was guided by Jim Kerrigan, javelin thrower Brett Byrd was coached by John Trower and Simon King worked on the steeplechase with top endurance coach Dave Sunderland, who also organised the training.

The main areas covered apart from event specifics, were fitness, co-ordination and mobility.

There was also a talk on Injury Prevention from ex-Staffordshire athlete and UKA physio Mike Garmston.

The purpose of the week was to ascertain the level the athletes were at from a technical and fitness point of view, to see if they required any help and to break down the disparate groups built up in the county.

In this way, the team now know each other and can fuse together at the All England Track and Field Championships as has been proven in Staffordshire winning the Overall Aggregate Championship for ten out of the last 11 years.

Ace Edwards is the Pride of Staffordshire Tuesday, February 20 2007
Tamworth athletes proved their ability to produce consistent high quality performances at the County Schools Cross-country Championships last weekend.

In the Staffordshire competition, held in Stoke, Rawlett pupil Kristian Edwards (pictured left) continued his improvement with a gutsy run to win the year seven boys' event.

Sam Greenbank has been picking up form all season and he finished in a creditable 30th position.

Luke Roughley took part in the year eight and nine boys' section and he too performed to the top of his form as he took second place.

Elyse Jinks ran in the year ten and 11 girls' race and her 13th position was without doubt her best race for many months and a welcome return to form.

Steve Deeley completed the year ten and 11 boys' competition in third place after a gruelling race over the three mile course where he was eventually beaten on the run-in.

Both Matt Wood and Jacob Hughes, from Wilnecote High, started the race but were withdrawn by their coach as they were suffering with heavy colds and bad chests.

In the Senior Girls' competition, Megan Jacobs ran a solid race to take fourth place, with Tom Adams and Simon King finishing in fifth and seventh respectively in the senior boys' event.

The Parkes brothers were not to be outdone in the Warwickshire Championships.

Anthony Parkes took second spot in the year seven boys event with Stephen also finishing in runner-up in the year eight and nine boys' section. Both boys attend Twycross School.

Roughley, Deeley, Jacobs, Adams and Stephen Parkes have all been pre-selected for the English Schools Championships which are to be held in Leeds on March 24 while Wood and King are awaiting the selectors' deliberations.

Cross Country, Weddington - Urgent Message Thursday, February 8 2007
At the Weddington Cross Country, one of the team managers put grass and twigs in one of the ditches before the start of the races.
All steps had already been taken by the course managers to make it safe and as a result of the above actions one of the qualified course offcials had to go in the ditch just before the first race to remove the items.
It is a dangerous practice to interfere with the course
.
The following message is from Chris Lockley who is Secretary of the West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League.

"I am not sure what was being attempted, nor by who, and I am sure it will not be possible to investigate properly now.

The Host Club is responsible for all matters relating to the course, provided the League's requirements are met (ie laps, distance, funnels etc) and liasing with the Referee.  As such they do the risk assessmemt and take all necessary measures to eliminate or reduce hazards.

No-one else should interfere with these arrangements.  If you feel there is a problem, it should be discussed with the Referee or the Host Club's organiser".

Runners Battle Through Tough Conditions Sunday, February 4 2007
This year's Midland Counties Cross-Country Championships were held at Stafford Common in very heavy conditions after the recent rain.

A small number of athletes were representing Tamworth Athletic Club - with the remainder saving themselves for the schools championships and the final fixture of the men's league.

Samantha Lawton and Sophie Oldfield were the club's entrants in the under-13 section and both girls ran well to complete the course in 92nd and 93rd respectively.

For Oliver Wood, it was his first race for the under-13s as he usually races as an under-11. However, he coped well with the extra distance and finished 64th with Aidan Blythe not far behind in 69th.

Elyse Jinks was 77th in the under-15 girls race with Laura Lewis in 87th.

Matthew Wood (pictured) ran his best race for many years when he completed the under-15 boys race in 15th position while Luke Roughley was 33rd and Jacob Hughes finished 56th.

Steve Deeley lost both of his shoes during the under-17 men's race and he did remarkably well to record a position of 36th.

Tom Adams is improving with every race in the under-20 men's competition and he beat many athletes for the first time when he finished 21st over the 8km course.

The final race of the afternoon was the senior men's and Tamworth athletes enjoyed good results in the 12km race with Paul Tasker in 115th and Steve Deegan finishing 201st.
