Help Wanted With Level 2 Coaching Course on 9/10 April Thursday, March 31 2005

You may not be able to commit to coaching at TAC but you may be able to spare some time to help out over the week-end of the 9/10 April when the Level 2 coaching course, which is over subscribed,  takes place at the Marlborough Way Stadium.

Kevin Wood could do with some help with outside equipment, preparation of the function room, manning the tuck shop etc over the 2 days. Your contribution would be much appreciated, especially by Kevin!

So speak to him ASAP if you can help.

TAC Pair Are Amongst The Best Tuesday, March 22 2005
Two Tamworth Athletic Club athletes have proved  that they are two of the finest all-round young athletes in the country when they picked up a gold and a silver medal between them in the AAA of England Indoor Combined Events Championships at Cardiff.

Nathan Woodward produced the finest performance of his athletic career when he won the under-17 Men's Championship at his first attempt since moving up an age group, chalking up four personal bests in the five event pentathlon.

Woodward clocked a personal best 8.99secs in the 60m hurdles and went on to record 9.27m in the shot. He then set his second personal best of the day when he recorded a jump of 5.74m in the long jump and cleared a very good 1.82m in the high jump.

Woodward was fourth going into the final event but produced a brilliant personal best in the 800m of 2:00.17mins to move into first place overall with a new best total of 3,131 points.

Meghan Beesley also produced a fine overall performance in the under-17 ladies competition to take the silver medal.

She recorded a good time of 8.93secs in the 60m hurdles, threw the shot 6.81m and recorded a personal best clearance of 1.56m in the high jump followed by another good performance of 5.29m in the long jump.

Beesley then completed the competition by clocking 2:28.55mins in the 800m to gain an overall personal best score of 3,288 points for second place.

Tom Challis and Sophie Taylor can also feel pleased with their efforts in their first combined events championship.

Competing in the under-15 boys age group, with two of the events totally new to him, Challis recorded 8.99secs in the 60m hurdles, 7.61m in the shot, 1.50m in the high jump, 4.81m in the long jump and a personal best of 2:24.95mins in the 800m. His overall score of 2,006 points gave him 12th place.

Taylor recorded three personal bests in the under-15 girls competition of 9.85secs in the 60m hurdles, 1.35m in the high jump and 4.81m in the long jump. Taylor completed her competition with 7.20m in the shot and 3:05.31mins in the 800m for a total score of 2,373 points and 12th place, despite suffering from a heavy cold.

In the under-20s women's competition, Sarah Williams chalked up personal bests in the shot with 6.29m and the 800m with 2:42.94mins.

Williams completed her competition with 13.38secs in the 60m hurdles and 1.32m and 4.81m in the high jump and long jump respectively for an overall points score of 1,956 and 13th place.

Sophie Cash can consider herself unlucky when, after a promising start in the under-17s ladies competition, she sustained an injury which forced her to retire from the competition after the fourth event.

Cash was timed at 11.06secs in the 60m hurdles, recorded 7.08m in the shot, 1.50m in the high jump and 3.63m in the long jump before her injury.

AAA Combined Events Tuesday, March 15 2005

Here's just a snippet from the event in Cardiff. Mick Sanderson's full report will appear ASAP.

The Under 17 Men’s competition had a sensational ending when Nathan Woodward (Tamworth) swept round the 800m in 2:00.17 to rocket from fourth overall into the Gold medal position with 3131 points. He overtook Will Lambourne (Milton Keynes), who finished second on 3021 points, Joe Lancaster (Sale), third on 2988, and Robert Kite (Basingstoke Mid Hants), fourth on 2933.

Inter Counties and English Schools Championships Tuesday, March 15 2005

The final two events in the domestic cross country calendar for Tamworth AC are the Inter Counties competition which was held on the 5th March and the English School’s Championships on the 12th March and Tamworth had 4 athletes in each event this year.

The Inter-Counties Championships were held at Nottingham in appalling conditions and for three of the younger athletes it was their first taste of this unofficial British Championships.

Craig Farrell was in the under 13 Boys competition and he showed that he is slowly returning to form after being injured for 10 weeks with an excellent 74th position, only 20 seconds from being in the top 20.

Simon King was 143rd in the under 15 Boys section having been surprised by the extremely fast start of the leading athletes.

Tom Adams has been suffering with knee problems all season and he did extremely well to finish 210th in such a competitive field in the under 17 Men’s.

Arguably the performance of the day from a Tamworth athlete was Martin Naunton’s 46th in the Under 20 Men’s race as he still has two more years left in this age group.

The English School’s Championships were held at Norwich in much better conditions although it was still bitterly cold.

Meghan Jacobs was in the Intermediate girl’s race and her 267th showed promise as she is still eligible for this age group next year.

Katherine Snowden’s preparation has been for the shorter events on the track this year and she did well to place 262nd in the 4.2km Senior Girl’s race.

The club’s final two athletes were in the Senior Boy’s event. Adam Bache was in his first representative race and ran his usual solid race in 252nd position but once again Martin Naunton took centre stage when he placed 29th.
