Burton Bags a Double Tuesday, March 27 2007
Tamworth Ac athlete Tom Burton competed in an open indoor meeting at Loughborough University over the weekend and set two club under-20 records.

He won the 60m hurdles in a personal best 8.59secs and made it a double when he won his 60m in another personal best of 7.43secs.

In the British University Championships at Sheffield, Laura Langowski, representing Bath University won her heat of the 400m in 57.46secs, went on to win her semi-final in 57.24secs and then took fifth place in the final in 56.43secs.

Langowski was also part of the Bath 4x200m relay team that won the B final for that event.

Sarah Williams representing Cambridge university took tenth place in the women's pole vault final with a clearance of 2.70m.

Former Tamworth athlete, Chris Smith, representing Nottingham University finished in fourth place in his heat of the 800m, clocking a time of 2:05.7mins.

Ashia Hands Out Annual Awards Tuesday, March 27 2007

All the seats were taken in Tamworth Athletic Club’s packed clubhouse when World Indoor triple jump record holder Ashia Hansen presented  trophies and medals to club members at the Annual Presentation Evening.

Nathan Woodward and Meghan Beesley were named joint winners of the prestigious President’s Cup for their many superb performances on the athletics stage over the past twelve months.

‘Double’ award winners were in abundance this year. The Jennifer Lloyd Award for the Best Performance in the English Schools was shared between Nathan Woodward and Meghan Beesley. The highly successful pair of athletes also picked up awards for the best sprinters in the over 15 section.

Javelin thrower Brett Byrd and hammer thrower Alex Berrow shared the Mick Sanderson trophy for the highest grade in any field event and Berrow also won the Ray Rogers trophy for the Men’s League Athlete of the Year.

The ‘doubles’ theme carried through to the Powell-Davis trophy for most attendances at training sessions which went to keen young athletes Olivia Woodward and Robert Stroud and continued when talented athlete Tom Challis took away the NJ Williams Cup for the highest ranked athlete in the Under13/15 category and the Ridgewood trophy for performances in the Young Athletes League.

Mark Williams, who was unable to attend on the night, deservedly won the Cincinnati Cup for Race Walking and the Male Vet of the Year.

Discus thrower Gemma Wheelhouse won the Women’s League ‘Athlete of the Year’ and the National Junior League winners were Sarah Williams who collected the Amy Adams Shield primarily for pole vaulting but also for her ability to turn her hand to any event and to Tom Burton who won the Tom Adams Shield for his excellent hurdling performances. Hollie Owen took the M J Showell Shield for her performances in the Young Athletes Track and Field League over the season.

The Indoor Athletics Trophies were presented to winners Jordan Roach and Sophie Taylor who both show real athletic potential in their chosen disciplines. Roach took 2nd place in the high jump in the first England Athletics Championship and Taylor took 3rd place in the Midlands Championships.

Young athletes Hannah Sargeant and Richard Mahoney were rewarded for all their efforts when competing in the Heart of England Track and Field League last season.

The Richard Thornton trophy for the Cross Country Young Athlete of the Year went to worthy winner Matt Wood with athletic all-rounders Ellie Redfern and Kristian Edwards collecting a cross country trophy each for the second year running. Howard Bush won the Graham Lovell trophy for senior cross country.

The club’s very successful race walkers collected further awards when young athlete Christian Jones-Loydon won the Ron Stone Trophy and Sheila Owen the AM Williams Cup. The female Veteran category honours went to Fiona Meldrum.

Last but by no means least were the winners of the Chairman’s Award and the Keith Martin Trophy for the ‘Best Club Member’. Rob James , committee member, membership secretary, official, team manager and volunteer bar helper  won the first award and Pat Wileman who volunteers hours of her time to the club won the latter award. Both have volunteered at the club for many years.

A presentation was made to guest presenter Ashia Hansen by young athlete Olivia Woodward and committee member Peter Flemming. The Chairman, John Graves, reminded everyone that Ashia had been injured for 2 years, had gone through rehabilitation which was a real test of whether she still enjoyed the sport. Even after all the operations and injuries she still loved her sport.

Ashia said that ‘Winning isn’t everything, its about learning and challenging yourself, both physically and mentally. After all the hard work and training you put in over the months and years coming out and competing and actually setting Pb's makes it all worthwhile’.

Adams Bags Team Silver at English Schools Cross Country Tuesday, March 27 2007

Seven Tamworth AC athletes, two more than last year, travelled to Leeds for the English School’s Cross Country Championships which were held at Temple Newsam. The course was very fast but extremely hilly and was a true test of cross country ability.

The Senior Boys race is the fastest of the day with many of the leading athletes having international experience and so Tom Adams’s 72nd place (158th in 2006) was a remarkable result with Simon King, Staffordshire, not too far behind in 162nd. Tom’s efforts earned him a team silver medal for Staffordshire, the first for a cross country athlete from the club for many years.

In the Junior Boys’ race both athletes performed well with Stephen Parkes, representing Warwickshire, in 37th , only 30 seconds behind the winner with Luke Roughley, Staffordshire, in 80th a further 15 seconds back. For both boys, this was their first taste of schools championships and they will have both learned from the experience.

Steve Deeley, Staffordshire, was the club’s only entrant in the Intermediate Boys’ section and his 172nd was a much better placing than last year.

The Senior Girls is one of the most competitive and for the two runners from Tamworth AC it was a real test of their strength and commitment. Newcomer Emily Field-Lucas, running for Leics, finished in 208th with Megan Jacobs, Staffordshire, a stride behind in 211th.

Edwards Leads the Charge for Town Club Tuesday, March 27 2007
Tamworth AC's young athletes finished the season in style at the final race of the West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League.

On a day which had the four seasons' weather in one with high temperatures, snow, hail and high winds, they came away with two individual victories on the day and three team medals and four individual medals for the series.

This was possibly the best set of results in cross country for the club in its entire history.

Pride of place must go to the under-13 boys' team. Kristian Edwards won the race to take the overall title.

The club's first five runners finished in the top 13. Richard Mahoney was ninth, Anthony Parkes finished tenth, Jack Childs claimed 12th and Oliver Smith was 13th in his first race for the club.

One of the strengths of this group of boys has been their team spirit and they were ably supported by Aidan Blythe (39th), SamGreenbank (54th) and Ricky Hawkes (65th).

The team itself won the series by a huge margin - the first time the club has ever won a team trophy in this league.

The under-11 girls' team tried hard not to be overshadowed by the boys and Corrine Blythe claimed her highest finish of the series when placing third.

Jessica Hirst slowly pulled through the field to complete the course in 18th place with good displays from Elly Redfern (33rd), Chloe Williams (41st), Bethany Puffett (45th), Rosanne Childs (50th), Sarah Turner (52nd), Rebecca Bradford (65th), Samantha Lawton (67th), Jasmine Oliver (71st), Alisha Arnold (82nd) and Sam Brady (88th).

This group of girls have the same determination as the boys' team and their teamwork over the series ensured that they came away with third place overall.

Many of the team will be in this age group next year and hopefully this medal will spur them on to greater things.

The under-11 boys didn't want to let the older boys have all the glory and in a tremendous race Robert Stroud won this event on the day, once again beating boys much older than himself.

With Ellis Cross taking tenth and Oliver Wood 11th, the team finished fourth overall.

The result wouldn't have been possible without the other boys in the team giving their all.

Keir Hatton was 44th, Ryan Christian (56th), Thomas Richards (61st), Oliver Williscroft (63rd), Riece Bruton (64th) and Mathew Redfern (67th).

In the individual series Robert was second and Ellis fourth. This was a wonderful performance from a very young team.

The club has struggled to field an under-13 girls' team all year and Leanne Lewis (67th) and Sophie Oldfield (72nd) have battled on gamely all year knowing they haven't got a team to support them.

The under-15 girls have also found it difficult to raise a team in some of the races and Lauren Mann (39th), Elyse Jinks (42nd) and Laura Lewis (54th) ran well.

The under-17 ladies finished fifth overall with strong performances from Megan Jacobs (19th), newcomer Emily Field-Lucas (22nd) and Jade Lepla (27th).

This was their final race as young athletes and next year they can look forward to races twice as long in the senior section.

The under-15 boys have been decimated by illness and injuries all year but the team still managed to complete the series in fifth place, a remarkable achievement in the circumstances and a testament to the resilience of this group of boys.

Mathew Wood (17th) just got the better of Luke Roughley (18th) on this occasion with Jacob Hughes (36th) and Adam McGee (48th).

The final race of the day was the under-17 men's and this team performed above expectation taking a well-deserved third place.

Simon King had his usual steady race in 13th and was chased hard by Joe Saddington (21st), Steve Harris (23rd), Sam Micklewright (29th) and Ben Horsley (34th).

Even though this was the final race of the season for many of them, the preparations for next year begin now with the first fell race on April 1 and the track season beginning on April 22.

Ace Walker Emulates Olympian Tuesday, March 27 2007
International athlete Mark Williams recorded a superb victory at the Inter-Counties National Race Walking Championships last weekend.

He claimed the men's 10km National title - whose previous winners included former Olympic champion Ken Matthews - at the championships held at Warwick University in Coventry.

The Tamworth man has been hampered in both his training and preparation over the past couple of weeks with the effects of a back injury but was determined to take the start line and lead Staffordshire's challenge in the championships.

The men's event, held on a 1,250km-road circuit around the University, had a strong line up to challenge for the title.

The early pace was set by Colchester twins Dan and Dom King, two of England's Commonwealth Games team from Melbourne last year, representing Essex, along with Hampshire's Jim Ball, and Williams, who tucked in behind the trio on the wind swept course.

The four made a clear break from the next group of athletes over the opening couple of kilometres.

The following 4km saw the lead change hands a number of times before Williams took control of the race at the 6km mark, establishing a commanding lead and eventually taking gold in a time of 47.53mins.

Gordon Chapman was part of a Warwickshire squad that took the men's team title. The Tamworth AC athlete recorded a time of 75mins exactly.

In the women's 5km event, Beryl Chapman was part of the Warwickshire team, recording a time of 39:39mins.

The club's youngest walker, Christian Jones-Lydon, had an excellent race in the boys under-11s 1km Development Race, competing against some very good youngsters from around the country and finishing fourth.

Athletes Set For Action Tuesday, March 27 2007
Tamworth AC's successful junior squads continue their training and competition this month.

The grand finals of the National Sportshall Athletics Championships at the NIA and the West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League are in their sights.

Athletes to watch out for are Tom Challis, Sophie Taylor and newcomer Matthew Browne in the Sportshall Championships and Kristian Edwards and the Parkes' brothers Anthony and Stephen in the cross-country competition.

Juniors in the under-15s age range and above and Tamworth's senior athletes and veterans are part way through the indoor athletics season and already a number of athletes, such as high jumper Jordan Roach, are showing the kind of form that could potentially provide winning performances when the summer track and field season starts in April.

The club's senior cross country athletes continue to meet up on training nights for track, hill and road work with some opting for road and fell competition in the summer whilst others turn their attentions to the track.

The reception squads for eight-13-year-olds, who meet between 6-7.15pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, will always welcome new or returning athletes.

Athletes in the 14 plus age group and above are catered for in the later squads that meet at 7-8.15pm.

All athletes must attend an induction session before training in the stadium can commence.

Williams Shows Form Despite Injury Woes Tuesday, March 27 2007
International athlete Mark Williams overcame an eve of race injury scare to retain his 3km Walk title at the British Masters Indoor Championships at The Valley Athletics Centre in Enfield.

The Tamworth AC athlete hurt his back less than 24 hours before he was due to travel to compete at Lee Valley and was unable to get any treatment before leaving for the event.

Williams decided to travel to the Championships and get treatment at the venue.

On arriving he headed straight for the treatment table and after intensive work with a chiropractor, he was able to make it to the start line.

Williams took the lead from the start and soon opened a clear advantage, eventually lapping the field to take the overall victory, winning in 13:6.08mins, ahead of Aldershot's Nick Sylvester and Irish walker Pat Murphy.

The Tamworth man had been targeting the event for a quick time but was delighted with his performance under the unfortunate circumstances.

Baxterley's Ann Wheeler, meanwhile, produced an excellent performance taking gold in her category.

The Nuneaton Harriers athlete's strategy of walking an even paced race paid dividends and a strong finish saw her take the title in 17:27mins.

Williams was back quickly, successfully defending his Midland 10km crown and making it an excellent five wins from as many races this season.

The event was staged at the Alexander Stadium and Williams again took the lead from the start, walking an even paced race over the opening nine laps and holding a commanding lead to record a convincing victory.

Williams took the title in 47.18mins, ahead of Nuneaton's Steve Arnold and Leicester's Chris Berwick.

Tamworth teammate Gordon Chapman had an excellent race recording a time of 74.30mins to secure the bronze medal in the Standard Cup - an award that is incorporated in the Midland Championships.

Tamworth's only representative in the women's race, Beryl Chapman, walked well to record a time of 39.41mins.

Adams is Pick of the Tamworth Runners Tuesday, March 13 2007
A Magnificent seven athletes from Tamworth Athletics Club represented Staffordshire in the Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championships in Nottingham recently.

The course was extremely muddy after the heavy rain of the previous week but the Tamworth athletes coped well with the conditions.

Tom Adams produced arguably the club's best performance of the day in the under-20 men's race, which doubled up as a selection race for the World Cross Country Championships.

His 84th place showed great promise for the future as he still has two years remaining in this category.

The club was represented by three athletes in the under-13s boys' race and for all of them it was their first opportunity to compete at such a high level.

Kristian Edwards was first home for the club in 71st place with Anthony Parkes finishing 108th, only 17 seconds behind his team-mate.

Richard Mahoney has missed some valuable training recently because of injury and a heavy cold and so his 220th was admirable in the circumstances.

Luke Roughley took part in the under 15s boys' section where he finished 202nd.

The competition is so fierce at this level that 30 seconds better would have placed him in the top 100.

Steve Deeley finished 163rd after his usual steady start in the under-17 men's race but in fields of this calibre it is difficult to make up positions in the latter part of the race.

Megan Jacobs was the club's only entrant in the ladies' events and she finished 227th in a race of exceptional quality.

The next race for the junior athletes is the final leg in the West Midlands Young Athletes League on March 18.

Depleted Team Ensure League Survival Tuesday, March 13 2007
A Team much depleted by injury and illness still managed to ensure Tamworth Athletic Club remained in Division Two of the Birmingham Men's League.

They finished the final race of the season in tenth position overall at Coventry.

The new traditional course that included thick mud, obstacles to hurdle, hills and streams was a true test of endurance and was appreciated by all Tamworth athletes.

Howard Bush ran his best race of the season to finish as the first town athlete home in 43rd place.

He left his usual adversaries Tom Orton (67th) and Dave Williams (68th) trailing some distance behind.

Steve Deegan completed the course in 75th with fast finishing Nigel Fisher claiming 79th place.

John Jenkins tripped and twisted his ankle while clearing a tree trunk but still completed the race in 83rd place.

Newcomer Alan Oliver must have been shocked by the difficulty of the course but battled on gamely to finish 144th.

All senior athletes who wish to take part in endurance events need to speak to Tom Orton as the club has entered the Burton Road Racing League which takes place during the summer months and involves racing over distances varying between five miles and the half marathon.

Orton can be contacted through the club secretary on 01827 287177 or 260897.
