| Marathon Effort Pays Off For Wright |
Monday, April 25 2005 |
Weeks of gruelling work paid off for Andy Wright on Sunday as the Tamworth Athletics Club runner finished in the top 100 at the Flora London Marathon.
Wright, who has been running between 75-95 miles each week since Christmas in preparation, completed the famous 26 mile course in 2.33hrs, good enough for 98th place in the men's event.
Indeed, he could have gone even quicker but for badly blistering his feet just ten miles into the race.
Mark Trigger completed the course in a respectable 3.49hrs, while Marie Wood clocked 6.13hrs - a remarkable achievement in her first attempt at racing.
She was closely followed by Trevor Stevenson, who recorded a time of 6.20hrs.

| This Walker is a Real Wonder |
Monday, April 25 2005 |
The season keeps going from strength to strength for Tamworth AC's Mark Williams, who produced his best display of 2005 to win bronze at the prestigious British Race Walking Grand Prix. His success at Royal Leamington Spa on Saturday meant Herald Sports Award winner Williams also secured a silver medal in the UK Athletics 20km National Championships. Last weekend's event is considered the premier fixture for race walking in Britain and attracts only the elite athletes from all over the world. They also served as a Commonwealth Games qualifier for British athletes but as Williams has already set the required standard for the Welsh squad, he decided to treat the event as part of his training schedule. And his relaxed approach paid off as he was never out of the top six throughout the race, eventually finishing third behind Colchester's Dom King and Frank Buytaert of Belgium. In addition, Williams' time of 1.37:18hrs was 90 seconds quicker than his previous qualifying time this season. "This was better than I could have hoped for," Williams admitted. "I continued to train right up to the race and had a tight hamstring so I was expecting just to get some big race experience. "So to take third in the Grand Prix and silver in the UK Championships is superb. "It's been a great 12 months for me and the target of selection for Melbourne is now a real possibility - it would be great to go and bring back a medal. "I must thank all those who have helped me over the last year, including Peaks Leisure Centre and Tamworth Borough Council."
There was more success for Tamworth AC at the Grand Prix as Sam Webb finished seventh in the under-13 boys' 2km race in 12:12mins.Sam, who is one of the youngest in his age group, has recently been invited to a development training weekend for promising junior athletes. Sheila Owen set a new personal best of 16:33mins for 3km as she took third place in the competitive annual veterans match between England and Ireland. Team-mate Ann Ashton finished a very respectable eighth in 19:24mins.
