| Bid Success Will be Boost For Athletes |
Saturday, April 21 2007 |
| Tamworth AC has been successful with its bid for funds from England Athletics.
The bid covers the training of coaches and coaching assistants from the 'Children in Athletics' (14 ) and Level One (16 ) stage through to the Level Two and Three stages which will provide more coaches for the club's reception and intermediate squads which meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening at the Town Stadium.
The annual summer Star: track event for eight to 15-year-olds will also benefit.
The second part of the bid is for the provision of event specific coach mentors who will work with new home club coaches in high jump and throws to improve performance and gradually increase the number of athletes to new squads.
Tamworth's well known and experienced heavy throws coach Brian Sumner has recently moved to Peterborough to be closer to his family and while he will continue to coach club members such as English Schools competitor Alex Berrow, the club is keen to invest in training a replacement through the mentoring system.
The third section of the bid is already well under way and is about supporting our current junior multi-discipline coaches, who work with eight to 11-year-olds to increase their knowledge, skills and understanding of this demanding and crucial area of the sport.
The coaches have already taken part in a series of coaching sessions in their own time including long term athlete development, first aid, event specific training and the use of 'Elevating Athletics' which is currently being rolled out to schools across the country.
A further session on drills is planned for May.
The club has provided most of the training 'in house' with others led by Derek Yeoman's, who is the Staffordshire County Squads Co-ordinator for Development and Performance in Track and Field and an experienced UKA Level 4 coach.
He has the support of Catherine Pendlebury the Athletic Development Officer for Staffordshire who believes the innovative model could be developed and used in other clubs in the region.
Finally, as part of the bid, the Sport England Clubmark club is looking to appoint a Development Sports Coach to coach an additional Reception squad for primary aged children, over a 26 week period for two sessions per week and to run the five day Tamworth AC summer Star: track scheme in August.
The post would be open to an experienced UKA Level Three and above coach and would also include building and improving on school-club links within Tamworth and North Warwickshire.

| Edwards Leads the Way |
Thursday, April 5 2007 |
| Talented young Tamworth AC star Kristian Edwards carried his excellent cross country form on to the fells with a superb win in the first round of the under 12 section of the English Fell Running Championships held on the Wrekin Hill in Shropshire. The course consists of approximately 1 mile of severe hill climbing, negotiation of a quarry and then the exhilarating final run down. Competition from the more traditional fell running areas including Matlock in Derbyshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire was not enough to keep ‘Flatlander’ Edwards from his goal of being the first member of the club to ever win a race in this series. Not too far behind in 9th place was Oliver Wood which was also an exceptional performance as Oliver still has another year in this age group. It was Jack Childs’ first attempt at fell running and he too ran a well paced race to finish 12th in the under 14 boys race which shows great promise for the future. Samantha Lawton was the club’s only entrant in the girls races and her 21st position in the under 12’s was some 2 and a half minutes quicker than last year over the same course. For all budding endurance runners the fells are an excellent way to gain strength and endurance whilst running in some beautiful surroundings and it is the club’s intention to take part in many more fell races this season. If you would like to take part in fell running or any other events at Tamworth AC please contact Chris or John on 01827 260897, email tamworthac@aol.com or visit the website for further details at tamworthac.co.uk
