| National Sportshall Finals 2008 |
Monday, April 28 2008 |
| At total of 5 Tamworth AC athletes, two more than 1997, took part in the 25th United Kingdom Sportshall Finals held for the first time at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Four Tamworth athletes won their way through a series of regional and national events to be selected to take part in the Birmingham team and a fifth qualified for the National Final of the speed bounce as an individual, by winning the West Midland Regional Final at Worcester earlier in the year. Sportshall Athletics, which takes place indoors during the winter months, emphasises the importance of team competition and however fierce that competition may be it should always be friendly, fair and fun. Previous Norwich Union Sportshall winners have included Kelly Sotherton, Denise Lewis, Jade Johnson and Martyn Rooney showing that the competition provides a fantastic stepping stone into elite athletics. Playing key roles in the Under 13 Team were Sam Greenbank, Ellie Redfern and Samantha Lawton whilst experienced Sportshall competitor Sophie Taylor was Tamworth’s representative in the Under 15 All-Rounder Competition. In the Under 13 girls competition Ellie Redfern produced the sixth best vertical jump of 55 scoring 50 team points, Samantha Lawton hit 8.93 in the shot for 7th place and another 50 team points, while Sam Greenbank, for Birmingham’s Under 13 boys team scored 79 for 8th = place in the speed bounce. Birmingham won both the Under 13 boys and Under 13 girls team competitions overall. Sophie Taylor threw 7.66 for 16th place and leapt 2.11 in the standing long jump for 27th place gaining a total of 117 team points helping Birmingham into a sound 2nd place . It was disappointing that Sophie was unable to complete the Under 15’s All Rounder competition in her last year of Sportshall Athletics competition when the meeting was suspended due to the most unusual circumstances. Ellie Redfern was similarly affected and was unable to compete in the 4 Lap Relay. Kane Densley competed as an individual in the under 13 age group against athletes two years older than himself. He was the last to compete in his competition and finished with 85 bounces in 30 seconds to give him an excellent equal first in the competition. His gold medal was presented by UK international triple jumper Nathan Douglas.

To back up this role the club also requires a group of 6/7 people to take on the role of Home Meeting Managers for the following home meetings this summer: National Junior League – Tamworth – 25th May 2008 Young Athletes League – Tamworth - 1st June 2008 Heart of England - 6th July 2008 British Athletic League Cup – Tamworth –19th July 2008 – Kevin Wood and John Graves Young Athletes League – Tamworth – 20th July 2008 Tamworth Games - 25th August 2008 Kevin Wood, John Graves and Andy Day have already agreed to help but these jobs need to be shared out otherwise only a few people are covering far too many jobs within the club. These jobs include : announcers, recorders, opening up and closing the clubhouse and stadium, equipment moving including hurdles, equipment preparation, litter, bar and tuck shop, officials, sandwiches and many more. If helpers could sign up for as many meetings as they are able to cover then the workload will be spread out within the club. If you can only do one meeting you will have helped our club. Training and advice will be given. Contact Kevin, John or Andy if you can help or email them at tamworthac@aol.com.
