| Shine Awards Presentation Evening You have won one, two or maybe three of the following · A Tamworth Herald ‘Junior Sports Team of the Year’ certificate · Shine Awards Certificate/s · Something ‘MORE’ Come along to our special Shine Awards Presentation Evening on Friday 2nd June , pick up your awards and meet some well known athletes . Now the club has so many members it’s having a second Annual Presentation Evening dedicated to you, one of the U11 to U20 club members. The awards will be made for Cross Country (2005/06 season) , Track and Field (2005), Sportshall Athletics (2005/06 season) and Agility Challenge (completed on Sarah’s Training/Coaching Day on 1st April 2006) . At least a 100 athletes will be awarded with certificates and a selection of new trophies for each of the 4 sections mentioned above plus the athletes in the Junior Cross Country ‘Team of the Year’ for 2005/06 will each receive a copy of the official club certificate presented to a representative group at the Herald Sports Awards earlier in the season. *7.30pm start *Presentation of certificates & trophies by a Commonwealth Games athlete and 2 of Tamworth AC’s Internationals *Food, disco, bar, spot prizes and a special prize for the ‘Shiniest Outfit’ *Tickets are £4 each from Registration and the Bar and Tuck Shop - Thursday 1st June is your last day to buy!! *Parents, family members, club members and coaches are very welcome to attend with their junior athletes. | YAL Premier Division- Owen Stars as TAC Takes Second Place |

Tamworth's young athletes gained their best Young Athletes League Premier Division result of the season when they finished second at Cannock, with Hollie Owen winning the ladies' track athlete of the match award when she won the 300m event in 41.3secs. Full report in the Reports section.

| Tamworth AC's Laura Langowski competed in the International Match held at Loughborough on Sunday 21st May. In what can only be described as abysmal weather conditions and also being drawn in the unfavourable tight 1st lane , Laura finished in a creditable 5th position in the 'A' 400metres in 56.21seconds. Laura was also selected to run for the British University team in the 4x400 relay that finished 4th running a split of 55.4 seconds.

| The Best Athletes in Three Counties |

| Thirty four Tamworth AC athletes were in action in their respective county championships last weekend and they came away with an incredible 22 county titles and 45 medals. All 14 of the Tamworth athletes competing in the Staffordshire Championships in Stoke won medals with Alex Berrow (hammer), Alana Smethan (hammer), Simon King (1,500m steeplechase), Tom Adams (2,000m steeplechase), Brett Byrd (javelin), Tom Burton (110m hurdles), Ben Horsley (triple jump) and Charlotte McDonough (triple jump) all gaining county titles. Smethan won the senior ladies hammer with a throw of 39.47m to break the championship record, while Berrow produced a personal best throw of 47.79m to win his hammer and he completed a set of medals when he picked up silver in the discus with a throw of 30.28m and bronze in the shot with 11.09m. Simon King won the 1,500m steeplechase title in the excellent time of 4:44.7mins, a personal best performance, and Tom Adams picked up the 2,000m title in a personal best 6:26.7mins. Healso finished fourth in the 1,500m in 4:21.5mins. Byrd produced a fine throw of 53.40m to win the javelin and Burton won the 110m hurdles in a personal best time of 16.4secs. McDonough won her first county title with a personal best jump of 10.12m in the triple jump and Horsley won the under-17's men's triple jump with a leap of 10.88m. He was also third in the 400m in a personal best time of 57.2secs and sixth in the 200m in another personal best time of 25.1secs. Daniel Cash picked up silver in the 400m in a personal best time of 51.4secs and bronze in the 200m in 23.5secs. Faye Palmer and Danielle Norton both picked up championship medals for the first time.Palmer claimed silver in the 80m hurdles in a personal best time 14secs, while Norton also won a silver medal in the 200m in 30.1secs and a bronze in the 100m in another personal best time of 14.4secs. Sophie Cash snatched a silver medal in the 300m hurdles in 51.6secs and finished sixth in the 300m in a personal best 46.8secs. Ashley Smethan produced his best ever hammer throw of 35.29m for bronze and Stephen Parkes picked up a couple of bronze medals in the 800m in a personal best time of 2:16.9mins and the long jump with a personal best leap of 4.61m.
Meanwhile, at the Warwickshire and Leicestershire combined Championships at Leamington, 20 Tamworth AC athletes claimed 12 Warwickshire titles and two Leicestershire titles. They also claimed 25 medals after two days of competition. Warwickshire title winners were Nathan Woodward (100m hurdles, 400m and 400m hurdles), Meghan Beasley (80m hurdles, long jump and 300m hurdles), Don Smith (long jump and triple jump), Reanne Wood (hammer), Tom Challis (400m), Chris Smith (javelin) and Gordon Chapman (3km walk). Gaining Leicestershire titles were Ricky Hallam (pole vault) and Phil Owen (javelin). Woodward won the 400m in a personal best time, and championship record, of 49.8secs, the 400m hurdles in another championship record of 54.3secs, the 100m hurdles in 14.2secs and added a silver medal in the high jump with another personal best clearance of 1.95m, which also equalled the championship record. Not to be outdone, Beesley won the 300m hurdles in a championship record of 42.7secs, the 80m hurdles in 12.2secs and the long jump with a leap of 5.06m. She also clocked 25.6secs to win her heat of the 200m. Challis won the 400m in a personal best time of 54.1secs and claimed silver medals in the 200m with a personal best time of 24.8secs, the long jump with a leap of 5.45m and the triple jump with a leap of 11.13m. Wood won the hammer with a personal best throw of 21.85m and Chris Smith took the javelin gold medal with a throw of 33.70m.He also added a silver medal in the discus with a throw of 21.30m. Don Smith picked up two veteran's county titles with a leap of 4.48m in the long jump and 8.90m in the triple jump.Also gaining a veteran's title was Gordon Chapman in the 3km walk in a time of 21:52.6mins. Sarah Williams produced her best pole vault of the season when she cleared 2.80m for a silver medal and Rebecca Findley cleared 1.50m to take silver in the high jump. Sam Day picked up a bronze in the 400m hurdles in 1:06.6mins and finished fifth in the 800m in 2:31.9mins. Georgia Lorraine set a personal best time of 45.7secs in her heat of the 300m for and finished sixth in the final in 46.2secs. Nick Spargo finished fourth in the senior men's 400m in 53.5secs and Beryl Chapman was second in the veteran ladies 3km walk in 23:50.9mins. Francesca Hughes, competing in her first championships, won her heat of the 100m in 14.3secs and finished fifth in the final in the same time.Hughes also finished 13th in the long jump with a leap of 3.38m. Mark Williams, competing as a guest in the 3km walk, won the race in a time of 12:49.9mins. In the Leicestershire events, Hallam won the pole vault with a clearance of 3.70m and Phil Owen retained his veteran's javelin title.Three youngsters did very well competing in their first ever county championships. Eloise Redfern finished second in the 600m in a personal best time of 2:00.7mins and was seventh in the 75m in 12secs. Hannah Owen recorded a personal best jump of 3.85m for bronze in the long jump and Kristian Edwards just missed out on the medals when he finished fourth in the 800m in 2:36.4mins.

| Club Honoured for Innovation |

Tamworth Athletics Club picked up five regional honours at the UKA Clubs: Futures Athletics Awards. The club was received three first places for most innovative club in the West Midlands ahead of Birchfield Harriers, Young Volunteer of the Year for Sarah Williams and Strategic Leader for chairman John Graves. They also picked up two runners-up award for Junior Club of the Year and Club Officer of the Year for Chris Graves. The club was also called the most progressive in the West Midlands by Birchfield's reporter Tom McCook during a Radio WM interview.

| Premier Athletes in Top Three |

Newly promoted Tamworth AC produced another excellent performance to finish in third in the second National Junior League Premier Division match of the season. Both the men's team and the women's team recording ten personal bests as Tamworth maintained their top three place. Full results in the Report section and photos on the Picture Gallery.

| Williams Holds on to Title |

Race walker Mark Williams retained his Birchfield Open 20km championship title. The Tamworth AC walker controlled the 20-lap race in Sutton Park from the start and won by a convincing margin in 1:42.08hrs. Team-mates Mark Culshaw (2:09.10hrs) and Gordon Chapman (2:30.59hrs) also produced good performances to steer Tamworth to third place in the team championship. Williams followed up his success by becoming the first walker home in the Hinckley half marathon 24 hours later.

| Shine Awards Presentation Evening - June 2nd |

| Tamworth AC will be holding a special Shine Awards Presentation Evening on Friday 2nd June 2006 in the clubhouse at the Marlborough Way Stadium. The Shine Awards will be presented to our younger club members , aged 8 to 16, who have met the schemes awards criteria in Cross Country, Track and Field, Sportshall and Agility Challenge. The evening will start at 7.30pm and will include the presentation of certificates and trophies, food , disco, bar and a guest presenter . Tickets priced at £4 each will be on sale from the Bar and Tuck Shop from Thursday 11th May.(Please note that the £4 is a subsidised amount and includes the cost of certificates, trophies, engraving, disco and the food). Junior athletes to be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. A list of certificate winners will be posted in the clubhouse asap but you'll have to wait til the evening to see who wins the trophies!

| Young Athletes League - First Meeting of the Season |

Tamworth AC's young athletes found the going tough in their opening premier division match of the season in the Premier Division of the Young Athletes League. They finished fourth overall but still managed to produce 27 personal best performances and 21 individual first places. Full report on the Report Page.

| Where Are They Now? Nick Clarke |

| Twenty five year old Nick Clarke , who has been a Tamworth AC member since 1988 , recently won gold when he competed in the Canada West Men’s Indoor Pentathlon Senior event and bronze in the 60m Hurdles in the 2006 CWUAA Track and Field Championship hosted by the University of Alberta, Edmonton. His overall points for the Pentathlon totalled 3503, 203 points ahead of his nearest rival, and the individual results for the five events were- 60 Hurdles , 8.70; Long jump, 6.59m; Shot putt, 12.58m; High jump , 1.84m; 1000m, 2:59.53. Following on from this success he was chosen to represent the University in the Canadian Interuniversity Indoor Track & Field Championships in which he won the bronze medal in the mens Pentathlon. As a result of his performances he is currently participating in an intensive strength training programme, which will hopefully lead to him being invited to train with the British Bobsleigh squad in Calgary during July-August 2006. Nick is in his second year of a Master of Science programme at the College of Graduate Studies and Research at the Department of Kinesiology,at the University of Saskatchewan .

| The BUSA championships,for University students, were held in cold miserable conditions at Birminghams Alexander Stadium last weekend. Three Tamworth AC club members took part. The results are below. Ben Jones representing University of Leeds Saturday - 100 metres heat - 4th in 11.13 personal best " " " semi final 8th " 11.14 Sunday - 200 metres heat - 3rd " 23.07 outdoor personal best Monday " " semi final did not start due to illness Amy Frith representing University of Bath Saturday - 400 metres heat - 5th in 59.64 Sunday - " " semi final- 8th " 60.60 Amy also competed in both relays for Bath winning a bronze medal in the 4x400 relay. Laura Langowski representing University of Bath Saturday - 400 metres heat - 2nd in 56.83 Sunday - " " semi final - 2nd " 55.64 personal best and club record Monday - " " Final 5th " 56.00 Laura also won a bronze medal in the 4x400 relay. All 3 Tamworth AC athletes did extremely well in these major championships. Laura Langowski was extremely unlucky not to get an individual medal in the 400 metres.The club is very proud of these athletes who have managed to remain committed to athletics whilst maintaining their links with the club. Special thanks should go to those who have encouraged them in this - Matt Hargreaves, Rob James and Ken Langowski to name but three!

| Williams Gains Selection |

| Tamworth AC's well known race walker Mark Williams has been selected to represent Wales in the British Grand Prix in June against England, Ireland, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland, over 20K.And just to show he's on top form Williams won the Welsh 20km Championship in Sheffield last weekend.
