Putting Fun Into Sport at Tamworth AC Saturday, May 5 2007

A 'fun in Athletics' morning, held in Tamworthlast Friday, was designed to inspire the next generation of young athletes.

It proved to be mission accomplished as far as the organisers and youngsters were concerned.

Thirty children from three Tamworth Primary Schools - Dosthill, The Dales Juniors and Two Gates - gathered at the Town Stadium, home of Tamworth Athletic Club, to take part and enjoy a morning of athletics.

The event was run by Chris Hollinshead, one of three tutors from South Cheshire College, with support from 11 degree students who teamed up with the School Sports Co-ordinators from the Rawlett Schools Partnership, primary teachers from Two Gates and The Dales Juniors and representatives from Tamworth Athletic Club.

GB athlete Stevie Stockton, from North Staffordshire, who recently ran in the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa was also on hand to offer advice and support.

Everything at the event was designed to give the young athletes the opportunity of experiencing the many disciplines athletics has to offer and to receive coaching from the students who are following a sports degree.

Having tried out various aspects of running, jumping and throwing, the pupils and students joined together at the end of the morning for the final event - an exciting 'tug of war' competition which was then followed by a question and answer session with Stockton.

It is hoped that the event could be run annually and that the link between South Cheshire College and Tamworth AC will be expanded in the future, bringing further sporting benefits to the young people of Tamworth.

Tamworth AC's Starter Reception Squads are now open for the summer for eight-13-year-olds who are interested in athletics.

Jackie Wakeman, in her first road race for the club, was the fourth woman home and 57th overall, just in front of Michael Pierpoint in 58th.
