| Walker Battles With French For Vital Points |
Thursday, June 30 2005 |
Mark Williams made his international Masters debut at the weekend, representing Great Britain over 5km in a track and field match against France, Belgium and the British B team at the Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford, Kent. The Tamworth AC athlete, selected after some great performances this season, was still suffering the effects of a recent virus and had been unsure if he would be fit enough to compete after withdrawing from a prestigious Grand Prix event in Dublin over 20km at the weekend. However, he felt able to perform well enough for the team over the shorter distance. He produced another excellent performance to finish third behind two French athletes but ahead of the two Belgians and his three British team mates. Williams was never out of the top three positions and put up a spirited fight against the French duo. The opening six laps proved to be a bruising affair as all three athletes continually swapped places as the pace continually changed, with the Tamworth man finding himself sandwiched between the Gallic pair. He tried to make a move at about 3km but found the going heavy over the remaining 2km - normally his strength. Williams managed to find some extra pace over the closing stages but had to settle for third in a very respectable time of 23:15mins, earning good points for Britain. He has been selected to represent the Midlands in an Inter Regional Track and Field match against the North and Southern Areas next month.

SWIMMING OUTDOOR I'm checking out Chase Water Park.
Market Bosworth Water Park - This IS the situation : Swimming is allowed Saturday 7.30 - 9am ONLY. It is governed by a strict code - which is policed - which we MUST abide by: All cars must come and park into the park NOT on the roads outside. Cost per car £3.00 pay at barrier. £2.00 per person per swim payable to the duty swim marshals which are stationed around the jetty. The swim marshals will record all names of swimmers for the session on payment. Showers and toilets are spot-checked for tidiness. This agreement has been agreed by Biddie Foord of Terrapin Wetsuits with the Water Park. There have been incidents at the park by a selfish minority of triathletes which put swimming in jepardy for a while for all of us. If this code is abused ONCE more then we WILL lose a valuable venue. Please ensure that it is not you or anyone else from TACT which puts this at risk. Play the game: no exceptions! I suggest getting a carfull together and sharing cost.
WETSUITS Biddie is prepared to meet us at Bosworth one Sat morning and talk about / measure up those wanting suits. I've used hers for years and swear by 'em. We need numbers so if you are looking at your first suit or wanting an upgrade let me know. This is likely to be in July if we want to take this up.
KIT I will be meeting the kit supplier form TAC hopefully next week. Watch this space.
OPEN WATER & TRANSITION TRAINING I will be organising sessions at Bosworth on Saturday mornings starting in July. All abilities welcome. I know some of you will be racing, but I'd like to do something every 2 weeks through July - August.
OTHER TRI TRAINING Craig has kindly offered to help me explore the surrounding paths of TAC next Tuesday so we can put together sessions for either a Tuesday or Thursday based at the track. I have also asked about using our bikes on the track itself - with no-one else around of course. I intend to host a session of running - cycling (maybe with turbo trainers) either Tuesday or Thursday. This means that I'll alternate weeks leading a Tamworth weekday evening session with a Saturday Bosworth session July -Aug. This will hopefully provide a focus for us. Watch for dates.
I have plans for turbo training sessions at TAC in the winter and Strength - Conditioning as well...
MY HOLIDAY I'm away in the States June 18 - July 3: the small matter of a 100 mile footrace. Some holiday! If you want to keep track of progress updates will be posted on www.ws100.com. Race day is June 25th. John is away till June 15th. JUST GET STARTED WHILE I'M AWAY!
SUMMARY Join the club Go swimming with Paul Play the game at Bosworth Hands up for wetsuits Make friends! Oh yeah - and focus on what you can control, right?! | Track Form is Looking Good |
Friday, June 10 2005 |
Tamworth AC's Mark Williams produced another fine performance last weekend while representing Staffordshire at the National Inter-Counties Track and Field Championships. Williams was sixth in the final of the men's 3km walk from a field of 25 competitors, including 16 internationals. He recorded a very respectable time of 13:02mins. This was another excellent performance by the Tamworth man who has raced heavily recently as part of a punishing training schedule. He was always amongst the action at the front of the field and showed a good turn of speed, especially considering the high mileage he has been doing in training in recent weeks. "It was great to be invited to represent Staffordshire again at such big track meeting and come away with a good result," said Williams, who will next compete in the National 10km Road Championship

Welsh International Mark Williams claimed the first medal of the day for Tamworth, taking men's 10km walk in an excellent time of 47:04mins after a race-long battle with fellow international Steve Hollier of Wolverhampton and Bilston AC. The pair, who occasionally train together, opened up an early lead over the rest of the field and it became a two-man race over the 25 laps. Williams, who had completed another tough 27klm training session on the eve of the race, was pushed into second but was pleased that he was still able to make a race of it against Hollier, who is hoping to make England's team for next year's Commonwealth Games. Tamworth's youngsters also performed superbly in the younger age groups at the championships. Sam Webb walked exceptionally well to take victory in the boy's under-13 2km event. He controlled the race from start to finish and recorded a new club record time of 11:21mins.
