| Daley Thompson Tips Woodward For Success |
Wednesday, June 28 2006 |
| A young Tamworth AC athlete has been tipped for success by Olympic legend Daley Thompson after a superb performance at the recent Warwickshire County Schools Championships. Nathan Woodward scored a notable double in the intermediate boys 400m and 400m hurdles at the championships underlining his position as the number one all-rounder for his age group in Britain. That was enough to attract the attention of Thompson who is an ambassador to Sainsbury's support of the English Schools Athletics Association (ESAA) at all levels. The double Olympic decathlon gold medallist was impressed at Woodward's display and at the general quality of performances at all the recent County Championships and believes it bodes well for the ESAA Sainsbury's Track & Field Championships in Gateshead on July 7 and 8. Thompson said "Having seen the results for the various County Schools Championships it looks like we are going to have another great year for young English talent. "Nathan looks like he may be one of the stand-out performers at the ESAA Sainsbury's Track and Field Champs next month, but we will have to wait and see if he can reproduce this level of performance or an even better one. "As someone who competed in the finals of the English Schools Championships, I know first hand that the event teaches you how to handle yourself in competition, and hopefully for some it will be the stepping stone to greater things." Woodward will face a major challenge at the ESAA Sainsbury's Track & Field Championships, which are the pinnacle of the schools athletics calendar. Most of Britain's best-known names in the sport were winners in the event including Seb Coe, Steve Ovett, Kelly Holmes, Paula Radcliffe and Denise Lewis.

| Greece is the Word for Athletes |
Wednesday, June 28 2006 |
Tamworth Ac athletes Meghan Beesley and Nathan Woodward will be competing at the birthplace of the modern Olympics this week in the World Schools Championships. The talented twosome are among just 20 athletes from across the country - ten boys and ten girls - chosen to represent England at the prestigious event. They will be testing themselves against the world's best as they take another step along the road to international athletics stardom. "I should make the final in Athens and I think I have a chance of a medal," said Woodward, who will compete in the 400m hurdles - the event in which he is both Midlands and Warwickshire champion. It is going to be a big stage but I am getting used to the big events now." The two 16-year-olds are close friends off the track and Beesley believes that will be a big help when they head off for international duty. "It is nice to know someone else in the squad and great for the club that two of us have been selected," said the Great Britain under-20s international, who will also be competing in the 400m hurdles in Greece. "The whole atmosphere is different when you compete in internationals, you feel like you are involved in something bigger. It is more relaxed when you are with Tamworth. "I am happy with what I have been doing this season but I was not expecting to be in this event.I have been mostly taking part in 300m hurdles race so this is a serious competition for me."
Multi-talented Beesley, who is coached by Trevor Marsay, is the current Midlands champions over 60m, 200m and 300m and she came within 0.12secs of breaking the British under-20s record for the 400m hurdles at last week's Midland Counties Championships. She is also the Warwickshire hurdles champion over 80m and 300m, as well as the long jump. Woodward is coached by Matt Hargreaves and has ten titles to his name already this year. He is the reigning National Indoor champion for both the 800m and combined events.

| Birchmoor athlete Meghan Beesley is officially the second fastest female British under-20s 400m hurdler in history. The 16-year-old was just 0.12secs away from breaking Faye Harding's British record when she stopped the clock in 1:00.18mins at the Midland Counties under-20s Championships last weekend. As well as the gold she picked up in the 400m hurdles, the Polesworth High School pupil proved once again what a good all-round athlete she is by picking up a bronze in the 200m. | Williams Walks His Way to UKA Championship Win |
Wednesday, June 28 2006 |
Tamworth AC race walker Mark Williams has continued his superb run of form when he walked his way to victory in the UKA National 20km Championship in Leamington. Williams was representing Wales against England, Ireland, Belgium, Denmark and Switzerland in the match, plus invited walkers from around the world, many of whom had Olympic World Championship experience. The tough qualifying standard that had to be obtained at the UKA Championships in order to qualify for the event meant that the field was as elite as possible. Williams has been in great form this season winning ten regional and national titles so far, but hi preparations were affected by a virus and the race was held in fierce heat. However, he walked a sensible, measured race and as walkers dropped out, Williams steadily came through the field to finish as the first UK walker home behind Yohann Diniz of France. "This was not my quickest performance but because I knew it would not be a day for fast times, I knew I had to look after myself to make sure I got through 20km," he said. "I had to judge the race as it went along, to get the best result possible. When I looked at the start list I would have took a top 12th placing and first placed British athlete, especially in the conditions, so I'm delighted. It was great to race against such a world class field." Williams' performance may see him selected for the Great Britain team for the European Cup. Meanwhile, Williams has been selected to represent the Midlands in a 3km track and field match against the North and Southern counties. He has also been invited to compete in the AAA European Trials and Track and Field Championships in Manchester over 5km.
