| Athletes Are Top of the Class at the English Schools Champs |
Monday, July 17 2006 |
There were mixed fortunes for Tamworth AC's athletes at the All England Schools Championships at Gateshead last weekend.
But two athletes particularly caught the eye of former Olympic gold medallist Daley Thompson.
Coleshill's Nathan Woodward and Birchmoor's Meghan Beesley both won their events to add English Schools titles to their already impressive lists of honours this season.
Their success was the first time the club has had two English schools winners in one season.
Woodward won his heat of the 400m hurdles in 54.10secs and went on to win the final in 52.63secs - a performance that broke the championship record which had stood for seven years.
Beesley won her heat of the 300m hurdles in 43.72secs and the final in a personal best performance of 41.84secs.
"I was happy with my performance," said Beesley, who was disappointed last weekend when a heavy cold wrecked her chances of winning an individual medal at the World Schools Games in Greece last week.
"I wasn't sure if the time would be as quick as I wanted because of the wind.
"I was aiming for the national record and was only 0.2secs away but I couldn't quite believe how much I won by."
Her performance impressed decathlon legend Thompson, who is working with championship sponsors Sainsbury's.
"The overall impression is that there is plenty of talent out there at schools levels and Meghan is one of those who impressed," he said.
"This bodes well for the future of athletics in this country up to the 2012 Olympics and beyond."
Both Woodward and Beesley found out after the event they had been selected to represent England in a Schools International against Scotland, Wales and Ireland to be held at Grangemouth, Scotland this weekend.
Tamworth's Bret Byrd and Alex Berrow also produced fine performances in their throwing events.
Byrd threw a personal best of 55.58m in the javelin but just missed out on the medals, while Berrow, although not in the top ten in the hammer rankings, exceeded all expectations when he finished fifth with an excellent throw of 50.92m.
Sarah Williams reached the final of the senior girls' pole vault and finished seventh with a clearance of 2.85m, her best performance of the season.
Tom Challis and Hollie Owen were unlucky to be nursing injuries on their English Schools debuts.
Challis finished fifth in his 400m heat in a useful 54.16secs, despite a broken toe.
Owen, who was up with the leaders of her 300m heat after 200m, had to give way to a leg injury to finish sixth in another useful time of 42.36secs.
Both of these athletes gained valuable experience and will be back next year.
Woodward, Beesley, Challis and Owen also ran good legs for Warwickshire in the 4x100m relay events.
While Woodward and Beesley compete for England this weekend, Laura Langowski will be running in the Norwich Union European trials and AA Senior Championships at Manchester in the senior ladies 400m.
Meanwhile, the Tamworth AC National Junior League team will be competing in their final National Junior League Premier Division match at Mansfield, hoping to keep their overall third place in their first season in this division.

| Duo Pick Up Medals at World Games |
Monday, July 17 2006 |
Two North Warwickshire teenagers , and members of Tamworth AC, took on some of the best young athletes in the world at the birthplace of the modern Olympics last weekend and returned with medals.
Nathan Woodward from Coleshill and Meghan Beesley from Birchmoor both picked up bronze medals at the World Schools Championships in Athens, Greece.
The 16-year-olds, who were racing against older athletes, were part of a 20-strong England team that competed against nations from around the world over three days of track and field.
Woodwards' medal came in the 400m hurdles. He won his heat in 53.23secs and then finished third in the final in a personal best of 52.56secs, behind South African Cornel Fredricks and team-mate Toby Ulm.
He is now second in the all-time British list for under-17s in the event and the number one in Europe for his age group.
Woodward, who is the current Midlands and Warwickshire 400m hurdles champion, then ran the 300m leg in a 4x100/200/300/400m relay but England just missed out on a medal, finishing fourth behind Sweden, Turkey and Chinese Tai Pei.
"It has been the best week I've ever had in athletics," Woodward said.
"Everything about the trip was an experience and I am delighted with how well I ran."
A heavy cold robbed Beesley of a medal in the final of the 400m hurdles.
The Great Britain athlete had breathing problems over the final 200m of her final and had to settle for eighth place in 1:04.65mins.
She finished third in her heat in 1:02.68mins but then ran the 300m leg of the 4x100/200/300/400m relay and helped England come home with a bronze medal behind Russia and Italy.
"I was disappointed with my performance in the individual final," Beesley said. "I felt drained and had nothing left in my legs.
"But I was delighted with my relay run as I knocked 1.5secs off my personal best time.
"It was a fantastic experience to compete against athletes from so many different countries and I would love to do it again."
The duo are in action this weekend at the English Schools Championships in Gateshead.

| Fell Running is Just Wright |
Tuesday, July 11 2006 |
| Andy Wright, Tamworth AC’s most senior fell runner, has been concentrating on the English Championships which take the form of a series of 6 races, (2 short, 2 medium & 2 long distance) where the best out of 4 races count towards the final positions. To date Andy has competed in all of the first 4 races and based on the results he is currently in 7th place overall for the O40 class. His best result so far this season in an English championship event was in the Cardington race, based at Stretton . This was a short race (4.5m / 1800ft) run in very cold conditions where he finished in 26th overall and 5th in the O40 section. With the next championship event coming up in Lancashire in September, Wright is mindful of his hardest race to-date. The incredibly tough Ennerdale race held on a very hot day in June in the Lake District, 23m/7500ft, saw Wright holding a top 30 position up to halfway, when a fall, a badly cut hand and dehydration led to him slumping to 70th overall at the finish. Although a disappointing result he was pleased to have finished the course in such difficult conditions and has not been put off running similar races in the future. Wright, whose background is in track competition, seriously considered retiring from competitive athletics in 2002 after suffering on-going injuries. A run out in a small fell race in Yorkshire changed all that. He was really taken with fell running and continued to enjoy the races not only for the competitiveness but for the tremendous sense of freedom from running in the hills : competing against ones self and the elements.
Wright is aiming to support Tamworth AC’s men’s cross country team during the 06/07 winter and may even be tempted into running the Vets Cross County Championships and the 07 London Marathon. If you are interested in track, cross country or fell running competition and training please contact Chris or John at tamworthac@aol.com or phone 01827 28717

| Trathlon Club Set to Return |
Saturday, July 1 2006 |
Tamworth Athletics Club is re-launching its triathlon section by joining forces with club member and experienced triathlete Tom Dixon.
Dixon, who has used the club as his base for endurance running over the past year, is keen to introduce new athletes to the sport and has agreed to join forces with the athletics club after a meeting with club secretary Chris Graves.

"With the redevelopment of the new triathlon section the club will be in the enviable position of offering a full range of athletic disciplines, giving athletes the opportunity to take part in track and field, cross country, race walking, road and fell running and now triathlon," Graves said.
"The club is very pleased that an athlete of Tom's experience and commitment will be heading up the triathlon squad, which is fully affiliated to the British Triathlon Association and has full insurance coverage."

Saturday, July 1 2006 |
