| Numbers Are Doubled as Scheme is Hailed a Success |
Saturday, August 20 2005 |
| Tamworth Ac has hosted its most successful Star-Track scheme to date with double the number of youngsters attending at the Marlborough Way Stadium. Sixty youngsters aged between eight-15 took part in the five day programme of track and field. The coaching programme, which is sponsored by Norwich Union, Sport Across Staffordshire and Tamworth AC, was headed up by Chris Hollinshead and two of Tamworth AC's most qualified UKA coaches. They were helped by 12 coaching assistants including English Schools international silver medallist Nathan Woodward, one of Tamworth's most promising athletes. Hannah Moody, UK:Athletics development coordinator, visited Tamworth to see the scheme in action and praised the delivery and organisation of the Tamworth AC Star:Track programme. "Yet again Tamworth AC organised and delivered a highly successful, action packed week of athletics, thanks to the hard work and commitment of the coaches and club volunteers, and the enthusiasm of the young athletes," said Tamworth AC secretary and Star:Track coordinator Chris Graves. "The abundance of athletic talent in Tamworth and the surrounding areas never ceases to amaze me and who knows, one of those attending this year's scheme could be an Olympic champion of the future." There is still an opportunity for youngsters aged between eight-13 to attend the Tamworth AC starter group for athletics. Phone the club on 01827 260897.

| TAC Out in Force |
Saturday, August 20 2005 |
| A glorious summer evening was the backdrop to this years’ sixteenth annual Shugborough Relay when the turn out from Tamworth AC’s athletes was the best in the club’s history. The multi-terrain event requires teams of four athletes to complete a course of 2 miles each in the grounds of Shugborough Hall. The race is an opportunity for the athletes of all ages to compete with and against each other. Tamworth entered 10 teams of athletes whose ages ranged from 8 to 45 years and with team names such as the Tamworth Tigers, Tortoises and Terriers, In order to enhance the social aspect of the race the Tamworth team manager, Tom Orton, ensured that each team consisted of both male and female athletes and younger and older clubmates. This gave the opportunity for the younger athletes to pit their strength against the clubs more experienced runners and those from other teams from around the Midlands area. The individual times over the two mile course were: Tom Orton (10.26mins); Paul Tasker (10.37); Howard Bush (10.51); Simon King (10.53); John Jenkins (11.03; Tom Orton (11.03); Adam Bache (11.10); Steve Deeley (11.13); Mat Logan (11.27); Mike Pierpoint (12.14); Dave Williams (12.16); Karl Graves (12.27); Kristian Edwards (12.34); Joe Saddington (12.39); Mat Wood (13.00); Megan Jacobs (13.17); Marianne Pritchard (13.50); Kat Snowden (14.00); Amy Williams (14.11); Rebecca Hallam (14.22); Elyse Jinks (14.23); Nathan Christian (14.26); Ashley Smetham (14.40); Robert Farrell (14.51); Oliver Wood (15.02); Matthew Webb (15.11); Joanne Snowden (15.34); Katie Barker (15.35); Nicole King (15.35); Leanne Lewis (15.37); Sarah Williams (15.45); Laura Lewis (15.48); Craig Farrel (16.00); Rebecca Pate (16.06); Sophie Kelly (16.45); Jenna Passey (16.47); Emma Farrell (16.47) and Gina Heseltine (17.06). | Tamworth AC Star Track - UKA Press Release |
Monday, August 15 2005 |
Norwich Union star:track participants and coaches alike were welcomed by glorious sunshine at Tamworth last week. The scheme, which attracted more than double the amount of participants than last year, also attracted a flurry of new coaching talent. Two young athletes who were only taking part in star:track a year ago themselves, have now progressed to a role of shadowing the star:track coaches and learning how it is done. Simon and Nathan, both aged 15 are two of these youngsters. “I really enjoyed taking part in Norwich Union star:track last year after which I went on to represent Tamworth AC in the Steeplechase,” Simon said. “I completed my JSLA award in school this year and I want to become a coach when I am older. I am really enjoying learning from the experience of the coaches this week.” Nathan, who won a silver medal in the 400mH at this year’s English Schools Championships, is enjoying the opportunity of watching and learning from the coaches this year: “I want to take my Level 1 and Children in Athletics Course this autumn so I can work on the next scheme that Tamworth run,” he said. And it isn’t just the boys who are relishing the chance to coach; also coaching for the first time on star:track is 16 year old Claire. Explaining how she sees coaching as a way of “giving back to the club,” she said: “Norwich Union star:track is great for developing coaching skills across a range of events. The coaches on the scheme share their knowledge and experience in their specialised events so we can all improve our delivery. “I had such good coaches and opportunities as an athlete and I want to ensure that these opportunities are available for the children coming through the schemes and into the club,” she said. Tamworth organiser Chris Graves was delighted with the turn out and the system they have in place for developing the young coaches. “The young coaches are learning so much from the more experienced coaches on the scheme,” she said. “We have a mentoring system in place where the younger coaches can work with the more experienced coaches. It is great to see the scheme benefiting both the children and coaches alike.” The good atmosphere and rapport between the coaches was also evident in the enthusiasm of the children. “I enjoy athletics and joined the club a few months ago. I was given a flyer about Norwich Union star:track and thought it sounded fun,” Aliyah, aged 10, said. 'I am really enjoying the scheme and like the chance to practice and getting better at different events. I really enjoy it” Eleven-year-old James echoed Aliyah’s sentiments: “It is better than I expected! I have really enjoyed practicing my sprinting and have made lots of new friends. “The coaches are great because they listen to you and let you try lots of different things. They make it fun and run lots of fun competitions. I am now looking forward to the relays at the end of the week,” he said.
