Scheme Nurtures the Athletic Stars of Tomorrow Wednesday, August 30 2006
Tamworth Athletic Club's annual five-day summer Star:track scheme for eight-15 year-olds took place at the Marlborough Way Stadium for the fifth year running recently.

The coaching scheme, which is sponsored by Norwich Union and Tamworth AC, attracting over 60 youngsters.

The club's team of coaches guided the groups through runs, jumps, walks and throws, with the pole vault, hurdling and high jump proving particularly popular.

The star:track course once again proved an excellent tool for spotting and recruiting new talent to athletics, with several children already expressing an interest in joining Tamworth AC.

One of the club's most talented young stars, Nathan Woodward, was part of the 15-strong coaching team and is one of several young coaches that has been supported by Tamworth AC's coach education programme to become a UKA qualified coach and help run star: track during the holidays.

International race walker Mark Williams and race walking coach Alf Stokes also coached on the scheme, showing the young athletes how to 'heel, toe' in this tough endurance event.

On the final day, Athletics Development Officer for Sport Across Staffordshire, Catherine Pendlebury visited the scheme and lead coach John Graves congratulated the children, and presented their certificates.

Chris Graves, club secretary and star:track organiser, said: "Norwich Union star:track is a great development tool for athletics.

"It is a very successful way of introducing children to athletics in the Tamworth area.

"Our course was full again this summer. We have to limit the numbers based on the number of coaches and the availability of indoor facilities for wet weather, to provide the best experience for the youngsters.

"When the much-needed indoor facility is up and running the course will be able to take more of the budding athletes who were unable to secure a place this year."

For those who enjoyed the course or were unable to attend the Norwich Union Star:track scheme, there is places available son Tamworth AC's 'Starter' squads which run every Tuesday and Thursdays from 6-7.15pm .

Williams Sets New Records Galore Friday, August 18 2006

Race walker Mark Williams has set a new British record while defending his British Masters and Midland 30km Championship title.

The Tamworth AC athlete knocked 16 minutes off his personal best time as he won the championships held in Warwick last weekend in 2:27.33hrs.

Williams has been in stunning form this season, recording new personal bests in all the distances he has competed between 2km and 30km.

His new 30km British record is now his fifth British record of the season.

He discovered earlier this week that a record he set over 5km on the track in July had been officially ratified as a new European record, beating the long standing record set by German Olympian Karl Heinz Stadtmuller more than ten years ago.

The event also staged the Midland 30km title race, in which Williams took silver behind Olympic and Commonwealth Games finalist Andy Penn.

Williams and training partner Penn were involved in a race-long battle with British Internationals Dan King and Luke Finch.

The quartet drew clear of the field in the earlier stages before Penn pulled away to record an excellent victory.

"I knew from our training sessions in recent weeks that I'm a lot stronger over 30km than in previous seasons and was confident that a sub 2.30hrs was possible," Williams said.

"I now feel there is still more to come."

The Tamworth AC athlete proved that with an impressive performance the following day, winning the open 3km walk at the under-23 Home Counties International match at Derby.

Williams won in a very good time of 13.11mins in very blustery conditions.

Baxterly's Ann Wheeler continued her fine run of form by taking second place in the women's 10km Midland Championships in a time of 1:00.21hrs.

Wheelers performance came on the back of an excellent midweek league performance for Nuneaton where she stopped the clock in 10.24mins to win the women's 2km race.

If you are interested in training or competition in race walking (Juniors & Seniors)contact Alf, John or Mark at tamworthac@aol.com and all your messages will be passed on to the race walking team.
