Uttoxeter Success Starts the Season in Style Friday, September 23 2005

Uttoxeter is traditionally  the venue for the first cross country race of the season and this year it took place in sunny conditions with 11 athletes from Tamworth Athletic Club taking part. This was Tamworth’s highest number of entries for some years.

Kristian Edwards was taking part in his first cross country race for the club and he ran superbly to finish in 3rd place in the under 11 boy’s race with Oliver Wood not far behind in 16th position. A presentation followed immediately when the Deputy Mayor of Burton-on-Trent presented Edwards with his bronze medal.

In the same age group in the girl’s section Eloise Redfern was Tamworth’s only competitor and she too excelled herself with a magnificent 12th position, all the more remarkable as she is only just 9 years of age.

Robert Farrell was also in his first cross country race and he steadily picked his way through the competitors to record a creditable 26th.

The 4 boy’s in the under 15 section just missed out on a medal when they finished in 4th place in the team competition, only 10 points behind the very strong Stoke team.

Steve Deeley 15th, Craig Farrell 25th, Joe Saddington 32nd and Matt Wood in 43rd made up the team. This bodes well for the Midland Road Relay Championships in Sutton Park on Sunday.

Competing in the 3 mile under 17 races were Simon King who finished in 16th  position, with only seconds from a top ten place in his first year in this age group  and Megan Jacobs who was also in her first cross country race as an under 17 and who had her best race for many years when she completed the course in 9th place, beating many county representatives in the process.

Dave Williams was the club’s only entrant in the senior men’s race and he enjoyed the transition from the track with a 33rd placing.

Tamworth has a record number of  9 teams entered in the Midland Road Relay Championships on Sunday 25th September with the first race at 11.15. See John at the club to check if you have been selected.

Youngsters Flock to Starter Class Wednesday, September 21 2005
A record number of youngsters attended Tamworth Athletics Club's reception starter sessions.
An impressive 111 young athletes aged eight-15 attended the second year of the successful starter squads between May and September.
The scheme, jointly funded by Active Sports and Tamworth AC, attracted youngsters from all over the town and the surrounding areas, who were given a taster of all the athletic disciplines on offer at the club.
Although the track and field competition season has now finished, it doesn't mean athletics has stopped for the rest of the year so the club's athletes will continue to compete and train during the winter.
The youngsters will be hoping to emulate one of the club's rising stars, Alana Smetham, who represented the Midlands in the annual match against the North and Wales at Abington last weekend.
Smetham finished second in the hammer after throwing a new personal best of 43.03m.
Tamworth team-mates Meghan Beesley and Nathan Woodward are competing in the English Schools Combined Events Championships in Southampton this weekend.
