Tamworth Trio Boost B Squad in League Sunday, August 17 2008
Tamworth AC's B team produced an impressive performance to win their last Midland League fixture by more than 100 points last weekend.

That was enough to earn the club third place in their division.

Three athletes - Adam Smith, Nikita Shelyakin and Amy Frith - achieved a hat-trick of wins.

Smith had an excellent start in the 100m, winning in 11.3secs.

He then went close to his personal bests in winning the long and triple jump competitions with 6.27m and 13.69m respectively.

Shelyakin took the high jump with a new personal best of 1.60m as well as backing up Smith to win his long and triple jumps with 5.66m and 11.09m respectively.

Frith comfortably won the 800m in 2.27.4mins.

She then showed superior sprinting technique to win a close 100m in 13.2secs and later leapt to a high jump personal best of 1.50m to complete her third victory.

Frith also took second with 2m clearance in the pole vault.

Kat Snowden stepped down from her usual 800m event to sprint her way to two personal bests with a win in the 200m and a second in the 400m.

Georgia Loraine kept her unbeaten season going with victory in her 400m in 68.8secs, while Keeley Thorne was unchallenged with an easy 800m win in 2.45.0mins.

Veteran Rachael Eastland and youngster Laura Lewis took both 1500m races in 5.41.2mins and 6.31.8mins respectively.

Eastland narrowly missed a second win in the 3,000m with 12.31.3mins with Amy Williams also taking second in her 3,000m event.

Williams went one better winning her high jump with a performance of 1.25m.

Fiona Meldrum busied herself between track and field, notching up victories in the 200m in 29.7secs and the triple jump with a leap of 7.70m. Meldrum also took second in the long jump and third in the 400m hurdles.

The men's hurdles saw the welcome return of Neil Rudd and Dave Williams, who took second place in each of their respective 110m and 400m hurdle races.

Williams then took another second place over the 3,000m steeplechase barriers while Rudd returned to the flat to run a season's best of 23.9secs to place third in the 200m.

Both Chris Boden and Matt Hargreaves found themselves chasing the leaders in their 800m races, their times of 2.04.1mins and 2.10.1mins respectively earning them second places.

David Eastland improved by 10secs to carve a massive chunk off his 1500m personal best coming home in 5.05.3mins.

Veteran Jim Bartlett, his son Matt and under 17 Liam Wheeler covered the throwing events between them.

Wheeler produced three personal bests, winning his javelin with a throw of 36.00m, taking third in the discus with 28.73m and fourth in the hammer with 23.95m.

Bartlett senior took second in both his shot and discus and third in his hammer, while Bartlett junior threw a season's best of 38.37m in the javelin and added further points in the shot.

He also went under 12 seconds for the first time in the 100m.

In the women's throws, Sally Warren showed her solid hammer technique by taking second in a personal best of 23.99m. She also took points in the shot and discus.

Muriel Storey covered the other throws events but saved her best performances for the long jump and 100m, where she took second in each with personal bests of 3.98m and 15.6secs respectively.

Other competitors contributing in the individual events were Nick Wilkins, Dan Fleming, Nigel Fisher and John Jenkins.

The women's sprint relay team of Frith, Meldrum, Snowden and Storey demolished the opposition to win by nearly the length of the straight in a time of 56.9secs.

The men's team of Matt Bartlett, Boden, Rudd and Smith found themselves in a real tussle and snatched second in a close finish with a time of 46.9secs.

In the 4x400m relay, Frith, Loraine, Snowden and Thorne continued what is becoming a Tamworth tradition to win by an embarrassingly large margin.

They also broke their own division record with their time of 4.22.0mins.

In the men's race, it was excitement all the way as Wilkins, Rudd and Jenkins carried the baton round in close contention throughout.

The last leg fell to Boden, who timed his leg to perfection, storming to the front in the last 200m to finish the day with yet another Tamworth victory in another division record with a time of 3.40.7mins.

English National Cross Country Championships 2008

Athletes from all over the British Isles converged on Alton Towers for the National Cross Country Championships. The 2008 event, held in perfect weather conditions, was an extreme test of endurance with a challenging hilly course that was soft underfoot. The individual highlights of the day had to be the Parkes’ brothers, Anthony and Stephen, both finishing in the top 25 in their respective events. These were the best individual results for over 20 years and hopefully the family rivalry should produce exciting results for years to come.

Tamworth Athletic Club fielded its strongest team for many years in most age groups with the under 13 boys once again producing the best club performance ever in the National Championships. This was all the more remarkable as all the Under 13 boys and girls and most of the Under 15’s team were all newcomers to this prestigious and testing competition rounding off the cross country season.

Anthony Parkes and Kristian Edwards have had intense rivalry over the year with Anthony getting ever closer to Kristian and this time Anthony gained the upper hand with a superb 24th place with Kristian strides behind in 29th. To have two athletes in the club that rank in the top 30 endurance runners in the country is a remarkable feat but a team is not just two athletes and 9 other boys competed for the club. Oliver Smith was in his first National and finished in 93rd and Ellis Cross who is only just 11 was only yards behind in 114th. Ben Wright 135th, Robert Stroud 136th and Aidan Blythe 137th were neck and neck for the whole 3km with the positions being decided on the line. Oliver Wood and Sam Greenbank both ran well to finish in 249th and 263rd respectively, while Josh Roughley 306th, Zac Gray 314th and Ricky Hawkes 317th made up the Tamworth team.

The aggregate scores gave the team an overall position of 7th just a handful of points outside the medals. This was the club’s best ever team score in a national cross country event . The boys, who should be very proud of their performance this year, beat clubs such as City of Norwich, Warrington, Shaftesbury/Barnet Harriers and were the first Midlands club to cross the line beating off local rivals Birchfield Harriers, Stoke AC, Coventry Godiva and Royal Sutton Coldfield.

The club hasn’t had an 13 Girls’ team for many years but 6 competitors turned out for the club and finished in 31st place overall beating the city clubs of Sheffield and Manchester in the process. This is a very encouraging result and it is to be hoped that the team will stay together for some years to build on this. Corrine Blythe had a magnificent race with her 46th deserved after a very aggressive run. Ellie Redfern 255th and Beth Puffett 259th were the next club runners both of them fighting it out until they crossed the finish line. Jasmine Oliver 333rd, Elisha Freeman 356th and Sam Brady 365th found the course very difficult but completed the course and therefore ensured the club completed a team.

Lauren Mann was the club’s only entrant in the under 15 girls’ and her 188th position was a just reward for working so hard this winter.

The under 15 boys had just 4 runners but still produced results that gave them a 22nd place in the aggregate scores. Stephen Parkes was the first athlete home for the club in 25th which is an exceptional performance in such a competitive age group. Luke Roughley who has been concentrating on the shorter distances found the course a little difficult and so finished in 171st with Richard Mahoney 218th just catching Jack Childs 219th at the finish.

The under 17 men were 29th overall and all athletes paid for a slow start when they found it impossible to overtake other athletes in such a congested field. Steve Deeley was 172nd, Matt Wood 197th, Sam Micklewright 197th, Joe Saddington 219th and Jacob Hughes 225th. Hopefully this will be a good learning experience for them all in future years.

Unfortunately the older age groups failed to complete teams but all athletes who turned out for the club in these age groups should be congratulated. Simon King was 118th in the under 20 men’s with Kat Snowden 111th and Emily Field-Lucas 118th in the under 20 ladies’ section. Elise Jinks prefers the more difficult courses and she will be pleased with her 157th in the under 17 ladies’ whereas both Laura Lewis 181st and Amy Williams 184th found the course more testing.

The final race of the day was the senior men’s over 12k with over 2500 competitors entered. Martin Naunton’s 327 was the club’s best performance while Paul Tasker in 516th got the better of Dave Williams in 522nd. Steve Deegan usually likes hard courses but he struggled with the severe climbs to finish in 633rd. Nigel Fisher should be pleased with his 816th for his first attempt at a national championships.

The final cross country competition for the junior athletes in the West Midlands Young Athletes Cross Country League will be held on 2nd March at Perry Park, Birmingham.
