Triathlon Update Thursday, October 13 2005
Tamworth Athletic Club Triathlon
No doubt you’ve been wondering why it’s all gone very quiet over the
last few weeks!
After working hard with Paul Ferrier and John Williams to launch and
set up swim and run-based training opportunities – the latter with the
help of Tamworth Athletic Club (TAC) – I realised last month that in
trying to be in Tamworth every Thursday to lead a session and to build
the club from my Leicester base, I’d simply bitten off more than I
could chew. So here’s where we are now:

Potential Members
We have gathered 30 names of people who want to see a tri scene in
Tamworth. These are folks of all shapes and sizes and abilities. In
here are people with triathlon coaching qualifications.

Club Host
Tamworth Athletic Club continue to stand by their offer to host TACT at
the Tamworth stadium base. Contact John and Christine Graves tel 01827
287177 / email tamworthac@aol.com
This means TACT simply inherits an existing club structure with a ready
base and like-minded people. We will be able to affiliate TACT to the
BTA easily because of this. There is healthy interest in TAC to ‘try
triathlon.’ TACT members simply pay annual membership of around £30 to
TAC.

Training Sessions
Swimming
Paul Ferrier www.fastlaneswimming.co.uk (Tel 0797 689 6912) has created
swim sessions at Wilnecote School Tuesday 8.15 – 9pm and Woodhouse
School Tuesday 8.15-9pm. Price £3.75 per session.
Also with Tamworth Swimming Club at The Peaks Thursday 8.30-9.30pm
price annual club membership £50.00.
Bosworth Water Park is available in season Saturday 7.30-9am price
£3.00 / car plus £2.00 / swim.
Running
TAC Tuesday and Thursday 6.30-8pm and now Sunday morning 10.30-12.30
noon. Various squads and coaches available. Confirmation that bikes
cannot be used on the track I’m afraid. Club fees apply on the night.
Cycling
We now have a contact with Tamworth Cycling Club and will be inviting
them down to the Oct 23rd session.

Injury Prevention & Treatment
With John Williams at Atlas Pain Relief Centre, Tamworth
www.atlaspainrelief.com Tel 01827 59943.

Website www.tamworthtriathlon.co.uk including a Forum for member chat.
You can log on and use this now to stay in touch with people.

Next Steps
TAC will open the track up on a trial basis on Sunday mornings starting
this month.
I will host a session Oct 23rd 10.30-12.
This will be a run-based session followed by a meeting with TAC to
agree how to progress TACT from here.
If you would like to be involved in the running of the triathlon
section of TAC please come down and make yourself known.
This will be a chance to welcome people to our world, give advice and
have a chance to train with others.

We will need local people to step up and lead the development of the
club. I will gladly provide guidance and a monthly focus if there is a
desire for this, but that will be the limit of my role given my
priorities for my own business and my geographical remoteness!

If you are prepared to help TACT in any way please come along on Oct
23rd when we will start this process.

This letter is being emailed to all on our database AND sent out in the
old fashioned post – so apologies for those of you who get duplicates!
Best wishes,
ANDY MOUNCEY

Midland Counties Road Relay Championships, Sutton Park, Sept 05 Sunday, October 2 2005

Tamworth Athletic Club entered a record 8 teams in to the Midland Counties Road Relay Championships which were held at Sutton Park on Sunday 25th September over a course of 3.9 Km for all athletes. The club had athletes in all 6 age groups.

Nicole King ran in the under 13 girls section and she recorded 18m 47s with Leanne Lewis completing the course in 19m 24s.

The 3 boys in the under 13 boy’s race recorded excellent times for the course with Bobby Farrell finishing in 16m 50s, Adam McGee 18m 01s and Luke Roughley, in his first race for the club, the fastest of the three with 15m 56s.

The under 15 girls finished in 20th place, 9 better than last year. Elyse Jinks ran 17m 34s, Amy Williams 17m 17s and Laura Lewis 19m 21s.

There were 4 athletes in the under 15 boys team where a single-minded Steve Deeley had his best run since he joined the club when he ran 13m 38s. He was supported superbly by Craig Farrell 14m 36s, Mathew Wood 15m 20s and Joe Saddington 16m 07s. The team itself finished in 16th position.

The under 17 Ladies team recorded Tamworth’s best result of the day when they finished in 12th place. Megan Jacobs recorded 17m 24s, Katie Barker 20m 16s, Jo Snowden 20m 39s and Becky Pate 20m 58s.

The final event of the day was the under 17 men’s race and unfortunately Tamworth AC were a man short because of a last minute injury. Nevertheless the two athletes ran well with Simon King finishing in 14m 04s and Tom Adams, back on form after a long lay off due to injury, producing the best run of the day by a Tamworth athlete running 13m 16s.

The next event for the club is the West Midland Young Athletes Cross Country League on October 16th when Tamworth AC has over 50 athletes entered – yet another club record. The club is hoping for their most successful season ever at this age group and it is important that all athletes turn up for this first race at Pype Hayes Park.
