County Championships Monday, May 31 2004
Athletes from Tamworth Athletics Club produced a record haul when they gained 19 county titles, 40 medals and 25 personal bests from their various county championships over the weekend.

County title winners in the Staffordshire Championships were Tom Challis (100m, 200m and long jump), Juan Padmore (100m and 200m), Sophie Cash (high jump), Alana Smetham (hammer) and Tom Burton (100m hurdles).

Warwickshire champions were Meghan Beesley (100m and 200m), Nathan Woodward (high jump), Laura Langowski (400m), Reanne Wood (hammer), Claire Perry (javelin) and Ian Findlay (shot).

Leicestershire winners were Phil Owen (javelin and discus), Sheila Owen (300m walk) and Ricky Hallam (pole vault).

At the Staffordshire Championships in Stoke, Challis picked up a hat-trick of county titles when he won the under-13 boys 100m in 13.4secs, the 200m in 28sces and the long jump with 4.71m, all personal best performances.

Padmore gained a sprint double in the under-15 boys age group when he won the 100m in a personal best 11.6secs and the 200m in 24secs.

Cash won the under-15 girls high jump with a personal best clearance of 1.50m and took second place in the 75m hurdles, equalling her personal best of 13.4secs. Smetham took the under-20 ladies hammer title with a throw of 36.17m and Burton the under-17 men's 100m hurdles in 17.2secs.

Tom Hardman took second place in the under-17 men's javelin with a personal best throw of 27.96m and Ashley Smetham also produced a personal best throw of 27.96m in the under-15 boys hammer for another second place.

Alex Berrow picked up three medals in the under-17 men's throwing events with second place in the discus with a personal best 28.88m, third place in the shot with another personal best of 11.03m, and third in the hammer with a throw of 31.23m.

Phil Clamp took second place in the men's 1,500m in a time of 4:06.6mins and Amy Frith finished in the same position in the under-20 ladies 400m in 1:01.1mins.

Daniel Cash took second spot in the under-17 men's triple jump with a personal best jump of 11.30m and fourth place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.65m.

Sara Benson earned herself a couple of medals when she finished in second place in the long jump with a leap of 4.48m and third in the 100m in a time of 13.6secs.

Martyn Naughton took second place in the under-20 men's 1500m in 4:10.7mins and Daniel Challis finished just outside the medals in the under-15 boys 100m when he clocked 12.2secs for fourth place.

Three newcomers to these championships also did well. Alex Elson took fourth place in the under-15 boys 800m in a personal best 2:36.1mins, Matthew Wood ran a good race for fourth place in the under-13 boys 1,500m in a time of 5:38.0mins.

Hannah Alcock picking up personal bests in the under-15 girls sprints when she clocked 14.3secs in the 100m and 29.9secs in the 200m.

At the Warwickshire and Leicestershire Championships at Nuneaton, Beesley picked up a sprint double in the Warwickshire Championships when she won the under-15 girls 100m in 12.8secs and the 200m in 26.7secs.

She gained her third medal of the weekend when she took third place in the long jump with 4.54m.

In the throwing events, Claire Perry and Reanne Wood picked up their first county titles.

Claire won the javelin with a throw of 18.70m and picked up a second place in the under-17 women's shot with 7.24m.

Reanne, won the under-17 women's hammer with a throw of 21.09m, a personal best for the event.

Langowski won the senior ladies 400m title in a time of 58secs and took fourth place in the 200m in a personal best time of 25.9secs.

Nathan Woodward won the under-15 boys high jump by equalling his personal best clearance of 1.75m and took second place in the 800m in a time of 2:06.1mins.

Ian Findlay won the under-15 boys shot with 8.12m, took fourth place in a personal best 59.9secs and set another personal best of 28.1secs in his heat of the 200m.

Richard Bown took second place in the under-17 men's long jump with a jump of 6.03m and equalled his personal best time of 11.5secs in his heat of the 100m for third place.

Sarah Williams took second place in the under-17 women's pole vault with the same height as the winner of 2.20m, third place in the triple jump with 9.78m and fourth in the long jump with a personal best jump of 4.65m.

Stephen Tonks took fourth place in the under-17 men's 1,500m in a personal best time of 4:30.7mins and Nick Spargo the same position in the senior men's 400m in 52.5secs.

Jenna Passey clocked 3:04.6mins in her heat of the under-15 girls 800m, Katherine Snowden set a new personal best of 2:27mins in the under-17 ladies 800m and Leah Moores 2:24.3mins in a fast under-20 ladies 800m final.

Mark Brooks took a good fourth place in the under-15 boys javelin with a throw of 27.74m.

In the Leicestershire Championships, Phil Owen won the veterans men's discus with a county record throw of 33.74m and made it a double when he won the javelin with a throw of 38.14m.

Phil's wife Sheila also won a title when she won the veteran ladies 3,000m walk in 17:22.1mins. Daughter Hannah clocked 12.9secs in her heat of the under-11 girls 75m and 27.4secs for the 150m.

Ricky Hallam won the Leicestershire under-20 men's pole vault title with a clearance of 3.40m.

Brothers Alex and Gareth Kavanagh also picked up medals for their first County Championships.

Alex took second place with an excellent 2:34.4mins for a personal best in the under-13 boys 800m and set another personal best of 15secs in his 100m heat.

Gareth took second place in the under-11 boys 600m in a personal best time of 2:08.8mins and clocked 13.1secs in his heat of the 75m.

Midlands Men's League - B Team
The Tamworth B team made a good start to their Midlands Men's League Division Five season, finishing in third place in their opening match at Hereford.

Kirk Allen won his 200m in 25.1secs, took second place in the 400m in 1min and the same position in the long jump with a jump of 4.85m.

Youngsters Tom Burton and Tom Adams made impressive debuts in the league. Burton won his high jump with a clearance of 1.50m and took third place in the long jump with 4.88m. Adams won his triple jump with a personal best of 10.69m, took second place in the high jump with another personal best of 1.50m in the high jump, and fifth place in the 1500m in a time of 4:48.7mins.

Richie McCabe won the B hammer with a personal best throw of 24.33m and fifth in the A shot with 8.43m.

Neil Rudd finished in second place in the A 200m in a time of 24.3secs, third in the 100m in 12.5secs and fourth in the 110m hurdles in 21.5secs.

Greg Richards took second place in the triple jump with a jump of 11.58m and third in the 400m in 55.2secs, with John Jenkins also third in the 800m in 2:16.1mins.

David Levett took third place in the shot with 6.76m, fourth in the hammer with a personal best throw of 25.91m and seventh in the discus with 17.20m.

Adam Bache took second place in the A 2,000m steeplechase and fourth in the 1,500m in 5:08.4mins.

Michael Pierpoint picked up useful points with second place in the 2,000m steeplechase B, third in the B 5,000m in 19:45.3mins and fifth in the javelin with a throw of 16.74m.

Michael Demeda clocked 13.9secs for third place in the B 100m and newcomer Glynn Brown 19:30.8mins for fifth place in the A 5,000m.

Both Tamworth relay teams finished in second place in their events.

The Tamworth women's team claimed victory at the second match in the National Junior Athletic League, Trent Division, while the men came a creditable third from the eight teams competing.

The women won with 243 points from Derby AC 239, Leicester Coritanian 160, Cannock and Staffs 157, Rugby and Northampton 110, Coventry Godiva 107 and Peterborough 74.

The men's match was won by City of Stoke AC with 317 points, from Cannock and Staffs with 250. Tamworth were a close third with 236, from Derby AC 232, Coventry Godiva 159, Rugby & Northampton 126, Leicester Coritanian 114 and Peterborough 89.

Starring for the girls was Jenna Lander who won athlete of the match for a tremendous personal best hammer throw of 46.49cm.

Alana Smetham also threw a grade one 38.51m to take the B event. These two girls were more than 10m clear of any other competitor. Jenna also took third place in the B shot.

Gemma Wheelhouse was third in the A shot with a personal best effort of 9.02m. Gemma also came third in the A discus with Claire Perry second in the B event.

Rebecca Furber came close to her best throw when finishing second in the A javelin with 33.37m, Laura Castledine came second in the B event.

It was also a wonderful day for Lara Hooper and Sarah Williams. Both girls set new personal bests in the pole vault of 2.45m, Lara finishing second in the A and Sarah winning the B event.

Lara also set a new PB in the triple jump to finish second in the B event with 9.83m and, just for good measure, she came third in the 3,000m. Sarah came second in the A triple jump with 10.17m, as well as taking second place in the 400m hurdles B race. She also ran the final leg of the 400m relay.

Katherine Snowden equalled her PB in taking second place in the A 400m hurdles before setting a new PB of 1:04.5mins in the 400m flat race.

Abi Aubury and Rebecca 'Ribz' Hallam also worked hard for the team. Abi finished fourth in the 800m in 2:34.2mins before taking third place in the 150m.

Ribz came fourth in the B 400m and second in the B 1,500m.

In the very competitive sprint events, Justine Passey finished fourth in both the A 100m and 200m. Claire Free performed well to come fifth in the B 100m and Zoe Albini was third in the B 200m.

Claire and Zoe teamed up with Sara Benson and Rebecca Findlay to come fourth in a very close sprint relay. Claire and Sara also competed in the longer relay.

Sara came third in the A long jump with a season's best jump of 4.68m. Rebecca Findlay came third in the B high jump with 1.45m and won the B 100m hurdles.

Danielle Allen was fourth in the A high jump with a clearance of 1.50m and also came fourth in the A 100m hurdles and third in the B long jump.

For the men's team, young throwers Alex Berrow and David Levett continued their remarkable progress. Throwing a heavier weight than their age group, Alex set PBs in the hammer of 34.42m, the shot of 10.05m and the discus of 24.18m. David set a new PB of 34.80m in the hammer to finish fourth in the A event, also coming fourth in the B shot and fifth in the B discus.

Javelin thrower Tom Hardman again improved his best effort with this weight to record 43.60m to finish third in the A event.

Michael Pierpoint finished fourth in the B javelin and set a new PB to come second in the B 3,000m.

Ricky Hallam had his usual busy and productive day, coming second in his specialist event, the pole vault, with a clearance of 3.65m and also coming second in both the B 400m hurdles and the A 110m hurdles.

Neil Rudd again broke his PB in the 400m to finish second in 52.7secs and he also took fourth place in the B 200m.

Martyn Naunton ran well to come through into third place in the A 3,000m in a time of 9:18.9mins before finishing fifth in the A 2000m steeplechase in 6:46.9mins.

David Lines came third in the A 400m hurdles in 1:04.3mins and also came second in the B 400m and 110m hurdles.

The 100m relay squad of Mark Humphries, Richard Bown, Chris Mawbey and Daniel Cash showed their expertise at baton changing as they came second in 44.8secs.

Richard also jumped 6.03m to take third place in the A long jump and finished fifth in the B 100m, Chris finished third in the B long jump and fourth in the A 200m with 23.7secs, and Daniel equalled his PB of 1.70m to come fifth in the A high jump and third in the B triple jump.

In his first junior league event, Tom Adams, who is still only 14-years-old, did well to finish fifth in the B 800m and second in the B steeplechase. Adam Smith came fourth in the A triple jump with 12.27m and second in the B high jump with 1.65m.

In the 1,500m, Stephen Tonks came fifth in the A event and Adam Bache was fourth in the B race. John Jenkins, after finishing sixth in the A 800m, ran a storming final leg in the 400m relay to bring the team home in second place.

Young Athletes League - Premier Division Monday, May 10 2004
Tamworth's young athletes made an impressive start to their Young Athletes League Premier Division campaign with second place, just six points behind winners Cheltenham.

In the under-17 men's events,

Daniel Cash put up some excellent performances to win the high jump with a clearance of 1.70m and take second places in the 200m in 25.3secs and the triple jump with a leap of 11.11m.

Another athlete producing top-level performances was Richard Bown, who won the long jump with 6.24m, and took second places in the 100m in 11.5secs and the 200m in 23.2secs.

Michael Pierpoint earned valuable points for the team with first place in the triple jump with 9.55m, first in the 3,000m in 11:19.9mins, third place in the 1,500m steeplechase in 6:10.7min and third in the javelin with 10.93m.

Tom Burton picked up three good second places with 13sec in the 100m, 16.9secs in the 100m hurdles, and 4.97m in the long jump.

Tom Adams took second place in his high jump with a clearance of 1.45m, third place in the 1,500m in 4:46.7min, and third in the 400m hurdles in 68.5secs. Throwers Alex Berrow, David Levett and Tom Hardman also produced good results. Alex took second place in the hammer with a throw of 37.53m, third place in the discus with 24.62m and the same position in the shot with 9.73m.

David won the B hammer with a throw of 32.30m, took second place in the shot with 8.93m and third in the discus with 21.56m. Tom took third place with a throw of 41.30m in the javelin. John Jenkins took third place in the 400m and 800m in times of 56.7secs and 2:15mins respectively.

Adam Bache finished in third place in the 3,000m in 10:24.1mins and fourth in the 400m in 61.3secs.

Daniel Grogan took third place in the 800m in 2:17.5mins and fourth in the 1,500m in 4:45.8mins.

In the under-15s boys, Nathan Woodward and Daniel Challis both picked up a treble of first places in their events.

Nathan won the 800m in a time of 2:06.2mins, the 80m hurdles in 12.7secs and the high jump with a clearance of 1.75m.

Daniel won his 100m in 12.1secs, 200m in 25.1secs and long jump with a jump of 4.98m.

Nathan Jones-Faulkes won the discus with a throw of 25.86m, shot with 8.46m and took second place in the javelin with 31.66m.

Ashley Smetham gained a double in the throwing events, winning the hammer with 27.85m and the shot with 6.31m.

Ashley and Simon King also picked up useful points for fourth places in the 1,500m.

Mark Brooks also gained a couple of first places, winning the javelin with a throw of 28.20m and the high jump with a clearance of 1.35m.

Juan Padmore won the 100m in a fast 11.6sec with David Collier in second in the 200m in 27.9secs and first place in his 80m hurdles in 14.2secs.

Nick Crawford finished in second spot in the long jump with 5.05m and third place in the 400m in 57.4secs, with Matthew Prentice taking fourth place in the 3,000m in a time of 11:59.5mins.

Two newcomers to the team also did well in their first competition. Alex Elson gained second place in the 400m in 66.3secs and third in the 800m in 2:36.7mins, and Chris Smith took second place in the discus with a throw of 17.12m and third in the hammer with 14.07m.

In the under-13 boys, David Hudson won the 100m in a personal best time of 13.7secs. David also took fourth place in the long jump with 3.70m.

Six of the athletes were making their debuts in the team and all played their part. Alex Kavanagh took second place in the 1,500m in a time of 5:17.7mins, with team mate Matthew Wood second in the 1,500m in 5:28.8mins and fourth in the shot with 3.61m.

Adam McGee did well in the sprints winning his 100m race in 14.3secs and taking second place in the 200m in 30.7secs.

Ted White took third place in the long jump with 3.67m and Stephen Parkes fourth in the 800m in 3:01.9min. Nathan Christian took part in the three events, gaining fourth places in the 200m in 35.3secs, the 800m in 2:39.9mins and the shot with 3.25m.

The under-17s, Sara Benson picked up a couple of first places when she won her 100m in 13.9secs, the long jump with 4.37m and her 100m in 13.9secs, the long jump with 4.37m and took second place in the 300m in 45.7secs.

Justine Passey kept her habit of regular personal bests when she won the 100m in 12.8secs and finished second in the 200m in 26.6secs.

In the throwing events, Rebecca Furber won the javelin with 31.01m, Reanne Wood the shot with 6.26m and Laura Castledine the discus with 15.73m.

Claire Perry won her javelin with a throw of 19.06m, took second place in the discus with 17.88m and the same position in the shot with 6.58m.

Danielle Allen won the high jump with 1.45m, and took fourth place in the 80m hurdles with team mate Rebecca Findlay in second place in the high jump with a clearance of 1.45m, and third place in the 80m hurdles in 17secs. Zoe Albini took second place in her 200m in 27.8secs and Claire Free took fourth place in her 300m in 45.5secs. Katherine Snowden finished in second in the 1,500m in 5:35.7mins, fourth in the 800m in 2:32.7min and fourth in the 300m hurdles in 52.2secs.

Abi Aubrey picked up two second places with times of 2:44.5mins in the 800m and 5:50.4mins in the 1,500m. Sarah Williams finished in second spot in the long jump with 4.59m, and fourth places in the 300m hurdles and 3,000m with times of 54.6secs and 13:01.4min respectively.

In the under-15 girls, Laura Langowski took first place in the 75m hurdles in 12.7secs, second place in the 100m in 13.3sec and third in the high jump with 1.25m.

Megan Beesley won her 100m in 13secs and took second place in the 200m in 27secs.

Sophie Cash won her 75m hurdles in 13.7secs and finished in second place in the high jump with 1.40m.

Charlotte Elvins took two second places with times of 28.4secs for the 200m and 2:28.4mins in the 800m.

Laura Taylor also picked up a couple of second places with 12.79m in the discus and 6.79m in the shot.

Megan Jacobs finished in third place in the long jump with 3.80m. Danielle Webb took a couple of fourth places with a time of 5:55.9mins in the 1,500m and a throw of 14.43m in the javelin.

Three newcomers to the team also did well. Nicola Tarver finished in second place in the discus with a throw of 15.50m and second in the shot with 6.32m.

Charlotte McDonough finished in third place in the long jump with 4.39m and Hannah Alcock was fourth in the javelin with 9.75m.

At the Herts, Middx and Surrey 10km Championships in Battersea Park, London, Mark Culshaw guested and went through 2km in 10:50mins and reached 5km in 28:15mins but lost some time on the second half of the race, finishing in 58:58mins.
