Tamworth Athletes Remain Amongst Elite Teams Wednesday, July 26 2006
Tamworth AC's junior squad finished their debut season amongst the elite of athletics clubs in a creditable fourth place.

Tamworth competed in the final National Junior League Premier Division meeting at Mansfield last weekend and manager Rob James will be pleased with the performance.

New personal bests were set by Tom Burton (110m hurdles, 400m hurdles and high jump), Laura Taylor (100m and high jump), Sophie Cash (200m), Georgia Lorraine (200m), Rachael Line (800m), Meghan Jacobs (1,500m steeplechase), Sarah Williams (high jump), Liz Checkley (pole vault), Gemma Wheelhouse (shot), Marianne Pritchard (javelin), Ben Horsley (100m), Simon King (800m) and Sam Micklewright (3,000m).

Burton finished fourth in the 110m hurdles in 15.7secs, fifth in the 400m hurdles in 1:00.2mins and fifth in the high jump with 1.70m.

Taylor was second in the long jump with 4.89m, fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.45m and sixth in the 100m in a time of 13secs.

Cash finished fifth in the 100m in 13.8secs and in the 200m in 28.4secs, while Lorraine was also fifth in her 200m in 28.6secs.

Line finished sixth in the 800m in 2:33.9mins while Jacobs was second in the 1,500m steeplechase in 6:02.8mins and fifth in the discus with 12.29m.

Williams had a busy afternoon with third place in the long jump with 4.99m, third in the pole vault with a vault of 2.70m, seventh in the 400m hurdles in 1:32.2mins and fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.35m.

Checkley finished second in the pole vault with 2.15m and the same position in the 400m in 1:00.8mins.

Wheelhouse, as usual, played her part in the throwing events. She was third in the hammer with a throw of 22.23m and finished fourth in the shot with 9.41m, the discus with a throw of 29.82m and the javelin with 15.97m.

Pritchard was fourth in the hammer, fifth in the javelin with a throw of 18.89m and seventh in the 800m in 2:56.3mins.

Clare Hedderman and Alison Bird both finished seventh in their 1,500m events, while Jade Lapla finished third in the 400m in 1:03.4mins.

Horsley was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.01m, sixth in the 200m in 24.5secs and seventh in the 100m in 11.9secs.

King was second in the 800m in 2:00.8mins and fifth in the 1,500m in 4:30.4mins.

Micklewright clocked 10:39.1mins for sixth place in the 3,000m.

Alex Berrow, as usual, produced some good performances in the throwing events, taking three third places with a throw of 49.78m in the hammer, 29.36m in the discus and 11.75m in the shot.

Bret Byrd was third in the javelin with a throw of 47.65m.

Two of the younger athletes also did well in the throws with Chris Smith second in his javelin with a throw of 36.10m, sixth in the discus with 17.36m and seventh in the long jump with a leap of 4.70m.

Ashley Smethan was third in the hammer with 27.91m and sixth in the shot with 5.73m.

Tom Adams finished second in the 2,000m steeplechase and third in the 400m hurdles in 1:03.7mins.

Martyn Naunton was fourth in the 2,000m steeplechase and third in the 800m in 2:04.6mins.

John Jenkins finished sixth in the 100m in 12.5secs, while Ben Storey picked up useful points with fifth place in the triple jump with 10.60m, sixth in the long jump with f 5.31m and sixth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.45m.

Tamworth AC's men's A team had to make do with fifth place in their latest Midlands Men's League Division One meeting but they were just four points shy of third place.

Gavin Showell had a busy afternoon as he won the pole vault with a vault of 4m, finished fourth in the shot with 9.18m, sixth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.50m, seventh in the hammer with a throw of 21.17m and the same position in the discus with a throw of 21.27m.

Ricky Hallam won the 110m hurdles in a personal best time of 19.9secs, the pole vault with a clearance of 3.80m and finished third in the 400m hurdles in 1:06.5mins.

Alex Berrow finished second in the hammer with a throw of 43.51m, seventh in the shot with 9.66m and the same position in the discus with a throw of 17.42m.

Ben Jones finished second in the long jump with a leap of 5.76m, fourth in the 200m in a personal best time of 22.7secs and fifth in the 100m in 11.3secs.

Matty James picked up good points by finishing second in the triple jump with a leap of 11m, fifth in the 400m hurdles in 1:03.5mins and the 110m hurdles in 20.5secs, eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.60m and the same position in the 800m in a time of 2:44.9mins.

Simon King set a personal best of 6:51.3mins for second place in the 2,000m steeplechase and finished fifth in the 1,500m in 4:30.6mins.

Tom Adams was second in the 2,000m steeplechase in a time of 6:21.2mins and fifth in the 5,000m in 18:8.4mins.

Greg Richards picked up a second place and personal best in the 200m when he clocked 22.9secs and eighth in the 400m in 54.4secs.

Adam Smith was third in the triple jump with a leap of 12.68m, fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.99m and sixth in the 100m in a time of 12.2secs.

Nick Spargo gained a third place in the 400m in 52.9secs and newcomer Carl Dunne was fifth in the 1,500m in 4:50mins.

Andy Wright finished fifth in the 5,000m in 16:48.9mins, as did Richard Wileman in the A javelin with a throw of 34.95m and Phil Owen in the B javelin with a throw of 33.46m.

Women Make Good Start Monday, July 17 2006
Tamworth AC's women's team began their Midland League Division Three programme with fourth place at Sutton Coldfield.
  Personal bests were recorded by Samantha Storey (75m hurdles and long jump), Faye Palmer (80m hurdles), Laura Langowski (800m) and Georgia Lorraine (300m).
  Storey won her long jump with a jump of 4.19m and took second place in the 75m hurdles in 14.8secs.
  Palmer won the 80m hurdles in 13.7secs and Lorraine was fourth in the 300m in 45.7secs.
  Langowski finished second in the 200m in 25.8secs, third in the 800m in 2:19.1mins, fourth in the 100m in 12.7secs and anchored the victorious 4x400 team with Hollie Owen, Amy Frith and Liz Checkley.
  Owen also won the 300m in 41.5secs with Lorraine finishing fourth in a personal best time of 45.7secs.Frith won her 400m in 1min flat and finished sixth in the 200m in 27.1secs.
  Checkley was second in the 400m in 49.6secs and third in the 100m in 13.4secs.
Sarah Williams won the pole vault with a clearance of 2.80m and Hannah Sargeant won the 75m hurdles in 13.2secs.Sargeant also finished fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.35m.
  Alana Smethan picked up good points by winning the hammer with a throw of 38.05m and the under-15s sprint relay team of Samantha Storey, Sophie Taylor, Danielle Marczak and Milly Kellyman won their event.
  Taylor also won the long jump with a leap of 4.53m and finished fourth in the 200m in 28secs.
  Marczak was second in the 100m in 13.7secs, while Kellyman was runner-up in the 200m in 29.1secs, third in the 100m in 13.8secs and fifth in the shot with 6.17m.
  Claire Free finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 9.30m and claimed fifth in the long jump with 3.97m.
  Sophie Cash finished third in the 100m in 13.5secs and fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.35m.
  Reanne Wood was third in the hammer with a throw of 19.70m and sixth in the shot with 6.42m.
  Jackie Spargo finished third in the long jump with a leap of 4.98m and sixth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.40m.
  Also picking up good points for the team were Laura Taylor and Charlotte McDonough.
  Taylor took second place in the long jump with a leap of 4.80m and fourth in the 100m in 13.3secs, while McDonough was second in the long jump with 4.14m and third in the triple jump with 10.20m.
  Gemma Whitehouse finished fourth in the shot with 8.99m, fifth in the discus with a throw of 26.86m and seventh in the javelin with a throw of 15.09m.
  Faye McCabe was third in the javelin with a throw of 15.16m and Marianne Pritchard was fourth in the 3,000m in 13:45.1mins.
  Newcomer Rebecca Smith finished fifth in the A 3,000m in 11:41.7mins and sixth in the 1,500m in 5:32.1mins.
  Rachael Line finished fifth in the senior 800m in 2:39.6mins, as did Jade Lapla in the under-17s women's 800m in 2:33.7mins.
  Hannah Alcock was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 11.28m and fifth in the discus with a throw of 14.72m.Rebecca Hallam picked up two fifth places in the 400m hurdles and the javelin.
  Nicola Paul finished fifth in the shot with 4.05m and seventh in the discus with a throw of 11.01m.
  Amy Williams was sixth in the 800m in a time of 2:51mins and the same position in the discus with a throw of 9.43m.
  Laura Lewis finished fifth in the 1,500m in a time of 6:05.2mins with Leanne Lewis sixth in the 800m in 3:01.5mins and Elyse Jinks sixth in the 1,500m in a time of 5:46.9mins.

Athletes Set to Retain League Place Saturday, July 1 2006
Tamworth Athletics Club moved a step nearer to retaining their place amongst the cream of junior athletics when they finished third in their latest Young Athletes League Premier Division match at Solihull on Sunday.
  Tamworth fielded 61 athletes, despite the fixture clashing with the England World Cup match.
  In the under-15 boys age group, personal bests were recorded by Craig Farrell (80m hurdles, pole vault and high jump), Jacob Powell (100m and hammer), Ted White (discus and high jump), Stephen Parkes (800m), Luke Roughly (800m) and Ryan Cox (javelin).
  Farrell won his 80m hurdles in 14.3secs, finished second in the high jump with a clearance of 1.50m and third in the pole vault with 2.40m.
  Powell was second in the 100m in 12.4secs andin the hammer with a throw of 18.62m, and finished third in the 200m in 30.8secs.
  White was third in the high jump with 1.50m and picked up fourth places in the discus with a throw of 20.06m and the 80m hurdles in 13.8secs.
  Parkes won the 800m in 2:12.6mins, finished second in the long jump with a leap of 4.48m and third in the javelin with a throw of 21.70m.
  Cox picked up fourth places in the javelin with a throw of 24.75m, the shot with 6.64m and the hammer with a throw of 19.24m, while Roughley won his 800m in 2:14.5mins.
  Newcomer Simon Watson picked up a good second place in the 1,500m in 5:07.4mins, while Tom Challis finished in the same position in the long jump with a leap of 5.29m and was fourth in the shot with 9.80m.
  Tom Adams picked up a couple of third places with 57.6secs in the 400m and 30.5secs in the 200m.
  Matt Wood finished third in the 1,500m in 4:45.5mins and the discus with a throw of 13.98m.
  Adam McGee finished in fourth place in the 100m in 13.7secs and the same position in the 400m in 1:10.5mins.
  In the under-13 boys age group, personal bests went to Richard Mahoney (1,500m and long jump), Jack Williams (75m hurdles) and Kristian Edwards (1,500m).
  Mahoney won his 1,500m in 5:13mins, second in the long jump with a leap of 3.77m and third in the shot with 4.66m.
  Williams was second in the 75m hurdles in 16.3secs, while Edwards finished third in the 1,500m in 5:11.7mins.
  Newcomer Charlie Mayou picked up a couple of second places, stopping the clock in 2:45.5mins in the 800m and 15.9secs in the 75m hurdles.
  Also gaining a couple of second places was Patrick Heaney with a clearance of 1.25m in the high jump and a leap of 4.12m in the long jump.
  There were third place finishes for Aaron Cooper in the 100m in 14.7secs, Anthony Parkes in the 200m in 30.5secs and Ricky Hawkes in the high jump with a clearance of 1.05m.
  Jack Childs was second in the 800m in 2:39.1mins and third in the shot with 5.35m.
  James Scandrett finished third in the 200m in 30.8secs and the 100m in 14.7secs.
  Personal bests in the under-17 men's age group were set by Ben Horsley (100m and 200m), Adam Wotherspoon (400m hurdles and 200m), Steve Harris (800m) and Ben Storey (100m).
  Horsley was third in the 200m in 24.7secs and finished fourth in the 100m in 12secs and the triple jump with 10.97m.
  Wotherspoon picked up third place finishes in the 400m hurdles in 1:13.4mins and the 200m in 26.3secs.
  Harris was second in the 1,500m steeplechase in 5:27.8mins, third in the long jump with 4.46m and fourth in the 800m in 2:13.1mins.
  Storey finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 10.96m, third in the 100m in 12.3secs and fourth in the high jump with 1.55m.
  Joe Saddington finished second in the 3,000m in 10:37.2mins and third in the 400m in 1:00.4mins, with Ashley Smethan gaining second place in the hammer with a throw of 32.72m.
  Simon King won the 1,500m steeplechase in 5:00.1mins and finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 13.51m.
  Marcus Yoxall won the hammer with a throw of 17.45m, took second place in the shot with 7.29m and fourth in the discus with a throw of 17.09m.
  Chris Smith picked up two fourth places in the javelin and discus with throws of 36.04m and 21.34m respectively.
  Steve Deeley was third in the 3,000m in 10:08.0mins and the 1,500m in 4:46.4mins.
  Mark Brookes finished also picked up third places in the shot with 8.91m and the high jump with a clearance of 1.40m, while newcomer James Mayou was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 4.54m.
  Personal bests in the under-15 girl's age group were recorded by Danielle Marczak (100m and 200m), Hannah Sargeant (high jump and 800m), Rose Williams (javelin), Amy Williams (high jump) and Jenni Evans (javelin).
  Marczak finished third in the 200m in 27.9secs and fourth in the 100m in 13.6secs.
  Sargeant was second in the high jump with a clearance of 1`.40m and the 75m hurdles in 13.7secs, and finished third in the 800m in 2:47.3mins.
  Rose Williams won her 75m hurdles in 13.7secs and finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 14.20m, while Amy Williams was second in the high jump with 1.25m and Jenni Evans finished in a similar position in the javelin with a throw of 13.20m and the shot with 6.90m.
  Sophie Taylor was second in the 200m in 28secs and the same position in the long jump with a leap of 4.40m.
  Also taking a couple of second places was Milly Kellyman with 13.7secs in the 100m and 3.55m in the long jump.
  Laura Lewis was third in the 1,500m in 6:08.3mins and Sam Storey finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 11.20m.
  Sally Warren was third in the shot with 5.82m and fourth in the discus with a throw of 10.98m.
  In the under-13 girl's personal bests went to Josie Cassar (high jump and 70m hurdles), Emma Farrell (high jump) and Leanne Lewis (1,200m).
  Cassar finished third in the 70m hurdles in 13.6secs and the same position in the high jump with a leap of 1.10m.
  Lewis finished third in the 1,200m in 4:43.9mins, while Farrell finished in the same position in the high jump with a clearance of 1.15m and fourth in the 800m in 3:12mins.
  Fransesca Hughes won the 150m in 21.7secs and finished third in the 70m hurdles in 13.7secs. Lauren Whitehouse won the 75m in 10.9secs.
  Allyiah Reid picked up two good second places with times of 21.5secs in the 150m and 10.9secs in the 75m.
  Hollie McCabe won the B 1,200m in 6:22.9mins and finished third in the shot with 5.86m.
  Hannah Owen finished in fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 3.56m and third in the shot with 5.47m.
  Megan Dougall picked up a couple of third place finishes with a time of 3:12.2mins in the 800m and a leap of 3.20m in the long jump.
  Personal bests in the under-17 women's age group were recorded by Georgia Lorraine (300m and 200m) and Hannah Alcock (hammer and discus).Lorraine won her 300m in 45.7secs and finished third in the 200m in 28.6secs.
  Alcock claimed fourth places in the hammer with a throw of 14.28m and the discus with a throw of 15.52m, and finished second in the B javelin with a throw of 11.71m.
  Charlotte McDonough won the triple jump with a leap of 10.12m, finished second in the high jump with 1.30m and the hammer with a throw of 12.72m.
  Laura Taylor won the long jump with a leap of 4.76m and finished third in the 100m.
  Hollie Owen won the 300m in 41.5secs and finished third in the 200m in 26.7secs.
Sophie Cash was third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.35m and fourth in the shot with 6.57m.
  Faye McCabe was third in the shot with 7.22m and fourth in the javelin with a throw of 17.62m and the discus with a throw of 10.53m.
  Megan Jacobs finished fourth in the 1,500m in a time of 5:30.1mins, while newcomer Ellie Barrett finished in the same position in the 100m in 14secs.
