Ladies Push Themselves Into Contention Thursday, August 24 2006
Tamworth AC's ladies team are in with a shout of clinching a promotion spot to Division Two of the Midlands Women's League, writes Mick Sanderson.

The team moved into second place with one meeting to go after winning on home soil last weekend.

Personal best performances were recorded by Sophie Taylor (200m, high jump and shot), Samantha Storey (75m hurdles and javelin), Milly Kellyman (100m), Danielle Marczak (100m), Laura Langowski (200m), Sophie Cash (200m), Hannah Sargeant (75m hurdles), Lara Hooper (100m hurdles), Rebecca Smith (1,500m), Amy Frith (high jump) and Jessica Thompson (triple jump).

Taylor won her high jump with a clearance of 1.30m, took second place in the 200m in 27.7secs, finished third in the shot with 6.86m and, along with Keely Thorne, Kellyman and Marczak, won the 4x100m relay.

Storey claimed third places in the 75m hurdles in 14.8secs and the long jump with 3.84m, and finished fourth in the javelin with a throw of 10.84m.

Kellyman was second in the 100m in 13.3secs, fourth in the 200m in 28.8secs and seventh in the long jump with a leap of 4.04m.

Marczak finished a good second in the 100m in 13.5secs.

As usual, Langowski played a prominent part in the Tamworth victory by winning the 200m in 25.5secs, finishing second in the 400m in 59.5secs, third in both the 800m in 2:22.9minsand the 100m in 12.7secs, and anchoring the 4x400 relay team to victory.

Cash was second in the 200m in 28.3secs, and fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.35m.

Sargeant won the 75m hurdles in 13secs and finished second in the high jump with a clearance of 1.35m.

Hooper was also second in the pole vault with a clearance of 2.20m, fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 9.13m and sixth in the 100m hurdles in 24.5secs.

Smith finished fifth in the 1,500m in 5:14.7mins and Amy Frith picked up good points for the team with second place in the 400m in 1:01mins, third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.45m, fourth in the 800m in 2:28mins and she ran a leg in the winning 4x400 relay team.

Thompson, in her first competition of the season, was third in the 1,500m in 6:28.1mins and fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 8.87m.

Meghan Beesley picked up good points for the team when she won the 200m in 24.8secs, the long jump with a leap of 5.57m and finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 16.62m. She also ran a leg of the 4x100m relay in which the team finished third.

Also in the sprint relay team was Jackie Spargo, who won her long jump with a leap of 5.19m and the high jump with a clearance of 1.35m.

Jade Lepla won her 300m in 45.1secs, was part of the winning 4x400m relay team and also ran a leg of the sprint relay in which the team finished third.

Making a welcome return was Jenna Lander, who gave the team a good start by winning the hammer with a throw of 37.13m. She also finished second in the discus with a throw of 17.65m.

Picking up good points as usual in the throwing events were Gemma Wheelhouse and Leanne Wood.

Wheelhouse finished second in the discus with a throw of 30.67m and fourth in the shot with 9.07m, while Wood was second in the hammer with a throw of 20.58m and fifth in the shot with 6.40m.

Keely Thorne finished second in the 800m in 2:41.7mins and Laura Lewis was third in the 1,500m in 6:02.1mins.

As usual, producing good team performances were Sarah Williams and Laura Taylor.

Williams was second in the pole vault, third in the 400m hurdles in 88.9secs, the same position in the 100m hurdles in 25secs and fifth in the javelin with a throw of 15.88m.

Taylor picked up third places in the 100m in 13.2secs, the high jump with a clearance of 1.35m and as a member of the sprint relay team.

Tamworth won the match despite losing two of their athletes through injury midway through the meeting.

Liz Checkley, who was third in the 400m hurdles in 1:08.9mins and finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 17.92m, and Hollie Owen, who finished second in the 200m in 26.8secs, were both injured.

Olivia French finished second in the shot with 5.89m and fourth in the javelin with a throw of 12.87m.

Hannah Alcock was fourth in the discus with a throw of 14.40m, while Elyse Jinks was fifth in the 1,500m in a time of 5:45.5mins.

Amy Williams finished fifth in the 800m in 2:48.6mins and Claire Hedderman was sixth in the 1,500m in 6:38.2mins.

Youngster Meghan Dougall won the 800m non-scoring event in a personal best time of 3:06.8mins.

Tamworth AC's B team finished second in the final Midland's League Division Five match of the season at Hereford to clinch the title and gain promotion to Division Four.

Dave Williams won the 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 11:35mins and took second place in the 400m hurdles in 1:07.2mins.

Mat Hargreaves won his 800m in a personal best of 2:08.6mins, took second place in the javelin with a throw of 25.92m, and picked up good points for the team in the shot and discus.

Youngsters Ben Horsley, Nick Crawford and Ben Storey all played their part in the team's performance.

Horsley won his 400m hurdles in 1:11.8mins and finished second in both the 400m in 57.5secs and the triple jump with 10.96m.

Crawford finished fourth in the 100m when he equalled his personal best of 12.2secs. He was also second in the 200m in 24.5secs and third in the high jump with a personal best clearance of 1.50m.

Storey won the triple jump with a distance of 10.89m, the high jump with a clearance of 1.50m and finished third place in the long jump with a leap of 5.06m.

Mike Pierpoint equalled his personal best with a clearance of 3.20m for second place in the pole vault, won the 3,000m steeplechase in 12:40.4mins and finished second in the 110m hurdles in 25secs.

Rob Scattergood had a busy afternoon in the throwing events. He picked up a trio of bronze medals in the hammer with a personal best throw of 24.43m, the shot with another personal best of 8.98m and the javelin with a throw of 31.52m. He was also fourth in the discus with 25.8m.

John Jenkins claimed a good second place in the 800m in a time of 2:06.7mins and was third in the hammer.

Charles Parker was fourth in the 200m in a personal best of 26.7secs and third in the long jump with a leap of 4.38m.

Nigel Fisher finished third in both the 1,500m in a personal best of 5:10.8mins and the 3,000m in 11:48.3mins.

Sam Micklewright was third in the 1,500m in a personal best of 4:50.7mins and Tom Orton finished in the same position in the 3,000m in 10:37.1mins.

Completing a very good team performance were Nick Lane and Nick Wilkins. Wilkins finished second in the 400m in 57.8secs and Lane was fourth in the 100m in a personal best time of 12.1secs.

Tamworth AC's men's first team finished seventh place in this final Midland League Division One match at Mansfield and were relegated to Division Two.

Gavin Showell won the pole vault with a vault of 3.80m, took fourth place in the hammer with a throw of 22.49m, fifth in the discus with a throw of 23.59m and seventh in the shot with 9.38m.

Ricky Hallam won his pole vault with a clearance of 3.80m and was fifth in the 110m hurdles in 20.2secs.

Tom Burton finished second in the 200m in a personal best of 23.5secs and finished fifth in the 400m hurdles in 58.6secs.

Adam Smith put up some good performances in the jumps. He was third in the triple jump with a personal best of 13.38m, set another personal best in the high jump with a clearance of 1.75m for fifth place and finished in the same position in the long jump with a leap of 5.65m.

Alex Berrow claimed a good third place in the hammer with a throw of 42.40m, finished sixth in the shot with 8.95m and eighth in the discus with a throw of 25.60m.

Simon King finished fifth in the 1,500m in a personal best time of 4:14.4mins and was sixth in the 800m in 2:03mins.

Matty James was third in the 400m hurdles in a season's best of 1:03.1mins and finished fourth in the 110m hurdles in 21.1secs.

Also recording a season's best time was Paul Tasker in the 800m when he stopped the clock in 2:02.5mins for third place.

Tasker also finished seventh in the 3,000m in 9:51.4mins.

Nick Spargo finished fourth in his 400m in 52.6secs and Chris Smith was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 31.33m.

Carl Dunne finished in third place in the 1,500m in a personal best time of 4:15.9mins.

Neil Rudd set a season's best time in the 400m for sixth place in 52.4secs and finished seventh in the 100m in 12secs.

Howard Bush was sixth in the 3,000m steeplechase in a personal best time 11:6.0mins and seventh in the 3,000m in 9:53.6mins with Richard Wileman in seventh in the javelin with a throw of 34.42m.

Chris Mawbey picked up valuable points from five events with fifth place in the triple jump with a leap of 10.59m, fourth in the high jump with a personal best clearance of 1.70m and sixth place finishes in the long jump with a leap of 4.70m, the 100m in 11.7secs and the 200m in 23.5secs.
